Writing
Writing consists in making your simultaneous thoughts into
a network of ideas which are logically and linguistically
connected (coherence and cohesion) according to your
communicative aim.
A written text is made up of several
factors
Communicative
aim
The reason why
you write:
(inform, convince,
describe,
narrate…)
Text genre: (essay,
dialogue, diary,
letter,
etc.)
Receiver:
(teacher,
friend,
director..)
Topic:
subject,
contents,
Ideas you want
to develop
Style:
Word choice
(lexis, register,
tone)
Grammar and syntax
(verb tenses and modes,
concord,
conjunctions,
punctuation)
Text organization
= coherence and unity
(paragraphs, topics,
sections, parts)

1. Planning
- Who is the receiver?
1a. Orientation
- What is the
topic?
- What kind of
text do I choose?
- What is the communicative aim?
Defining the text coordinates
- Collecting the information
1b. Conceiving
- Elaborating
ideas
- Confronting
arguments
Data collection
List. Writing a list of ideas
quickly and without selecting
them, one below the other, as
soon as they come into your
mind
Some examples of techniques for collecting and grouping
your ideas
Cluster. Draw the initial topic
at the centre of a concept
map, then write your ideas
around it as soon as they com
einto your mind.
The ideas have to be
connected by association,
according to their affinity.
Some examples of techniques for collecting and grouping
your ideas
Deciding the order of the
topics/arguments
(list of points)
1c. Planning
Fix the overall structure
of the text
Ideas organization
Ex. Argumentative text
(aim: to convince)
Ex. Narrative text
(aim: to narrate)
conclusion
problem
arguments
(for antithesys)

Final situation
2. Writing
-Respect of grammar and
punctuation
Choice of the words
and syntax which are
more suitable for the
kind of text
- development of the contents
According to the kind of text
- text cohesion and
coherence
3. Revision
Make the final text:
· correct
· clear
· effective
- Decide its final version
- revise, correct and modify text
Storytelling
Storytelling, of course, means narrating;
but at the same time it also
means the art of telling
appealing tales,
that is the rules for constructing and telling
stories
Digital Storytelling
1) Selecting contents from the web depending
on the theme (videos, audio, pictures, texts,
maps, etc.)
2) Organizing them into a
coherent narrative
structure
3) creating a story made up of several
elements of different kind which allow an
emotional connection with the audience
It consists in:
A narration made with the help of digital tools
(web apps, webware)
4) Sharing
your work
on the web with
thousands of
people
Advantages of Digital Storytelling in teaching writing
Style of Storytelling by Julian Stodd
Besides teaching, storytelling can be used whenever
there is the need to support something through cosa
communication: a company, a brand, a product, a
person or an event
Five basic rules that must be followed to make
a successful storytelling
Know your
topic and your
receivers
Respect the 5
W
Use your
imagination
show, don’t
say!
Know the
beginning and
the ending
Be sure you know and understand the
subject/theme/topic of your storytelling and
your target audience:
the tone and the mode of your narration must
be credible, coherent and effective to the
receivers
1. Who is the protagonist/what is the focus of
the story?
2. What happens in the story?/What
main message(s) do you want to convey?
4. When does the story take place?
3. Where is the story set?
5. Why does your story take place?/Why do you want to
focus on certain things?
Effective
telling
Pay attention to
the details and to
the specific
elements of the
plot/picture
Don’t fill the story
with too many
useless narrative
items
Immerse your
target
audience in
in a sensorial
experience
To communicate a concept in an effective
and convincing way it is preferable not to say
it too directly Communicate a concept
Through the narrated
events
Be genuineBe convincing
The story must keep an organic unity and a
global coherence in the narration
Thanks for the attention !!
