InPro 4850i: New pH Technology for Chlor-Alkali Industry
Dear Colleague,
Mettler-Toledo Ingold is pleased to announce
the release of the InPro 4850i sensor, a unique
ISM pH/ORP electrode featuring a sodium-ion
reference electrode. This sensor is specifically
designed and targeted to the aggressive Chlor-
Alkali applications.
High salt background and chlorine cause drift
and maintenance issues with conventional pH
electrodes. The design of the InPro 4850i
eliminates the porous reference junction and
the associated problems of plugging and
electrolyte poisoning that lead to measurement
drift. All this plus ISM! This low maintenance
electrode will be a great fit for the typical 15-20
measurement points within a facility.
Key Features:
• Dual-membrane "pNa" reference system
- Long lifetime, hermetically sealed, high accuracy and low maintenance thanks to
sodium reference and absence of reference diaphragm
• Solution ground and shielding
- Stabilize the signal and enable redox (ORP) measurement
• Digital signal
- 100% signal integrity. Immunity to electrical interference and signal distortion
ensures stable and accurate data
• ISM technology
- ISM provides Plug and Measure installation, and predictive maintenance from sensor
self-diagnostics.
2. How does it work? (Very well!!)
The basic potentiometric measurement
principle remains the same; the millivolt
reading from the pH glass electrode is
compared to a reference electrode. In the
case of the InPro 4850i, the reference
electrode is not the traditional Ag/AgCl
electrode, but rather a sodium-ion glass
electrode. Similar to pH glass, the sodium
reference millivolt output is proportional to
"pNa" (-log [Na+]). In chlor-alkali applications
with constant background sodium
concentrations, this approach provides a
stable, reliable reference millivolt reading.
Application Notes:
• The InPro 4850i electrode design is specific
to the chlor-alkali industry in applications
where the sodium concentrations remain
constant.
• The calibration of the electrode requires
use of special pH buffers with a fixed
(3.9M) NaCl background. (Offered below.)
Important Housing Notes:
• Attention: Due to the electrode tip construction, the sensor is 5 mm longer than
traditional pH sensors, which needs to be considered in housing selection. It does not
fit into all standard housings.
• InFit 761, 762, and 763 can be used with the sensor extending an additional 5 mm into
the process
• A special version of the InTrac 787 will be available; call for quote.
• InTrac 775 is in development. (This is the new InTrac 77X for the InPro 4850i.)
• A 430 mm length for use with the InTrac 785 is under future consideration
Transmitter Notes:
• The transmitter firmware must be compatible for use with the InPro 4850i. Please refer
to table and timing below.
• Note that the M420 will not measure ORP. All other transmitters listed can measure
ORP.
