Carnation Revolution – Democracy and Freedom
EDITORIAL Democracy in Portugal is a system of government in which the citizens exercise power directly or
elect representatives from among themselves to form a government body, such as the National Parliament or
regional and local assemblies.
In Portugal before 25 April 1974, we lived without freedom or democracy. Before there was censorship and
the political debate was inexistent and controlled by the political police (PIDE). The Constitution didn’t guarantee
the rights of the citizens and Portugal was practically isolated in the international community.
The Carnation Revolution was initially a military coup in Lisbon, which overthrew the authoritarian regime
of Estado Novo, represented by the government of António Salazar. The revolution started as a military coup
organized by the Armed Forces Movement (composed mostly of captains who had participated in the Colonial War
and who had the support of the military) but was quickly supported by the Portuguese people, because the desire
for freedom and democracy was very strong. Also because of this, almost no shots were fired and the injuries were
very limited (only 4 people died, killed by the state police).
The name ‘Carnation Revolution’ comes from the fact that people offered this flower to the soldiers, as it
was a very common and affordable one, and the soldiers, not knowing what to do with them, put the carnations on
their weapons. Another interesting fact is that the coded passwords to launch the revolution were two songs,
played at the radio: E depois do Adeus, by Paulo de Carvalho, and Grândola, vila morena, by Zeca Afonso. As a
curiosity, Grândola was first sung at a Zeca Afonso concert in Galicia's capital of Santiago de Compostela, on 10
May 1972.
In Portugal, 25 of April is a holiday since then and it’s always remembered as the day of Democracy and
Freedom.

3. Karanfil Devrimi
Karanfil Devrimi, (Portekizce, Revolução dos Cravos) Portekiz'de 25 Nisan 1974 günü şiddet kullanılmadan
gerçekleştirilen askerî darbedir. Portekiz'in otoriter bir diktatörlükten demokrasiye geçişini sağlayacak iki yıllık
bir değişim döneminin başlangıcı olmuştur.
Devrim 24 Nisan 1974 tarihdeki Eurovision Şarkı Yarışmasında Portekiz'i temsil eden Paulo de Carvalho'nun E
depoi do adeus isimli parçasının çalınmasıyla başlatıldı. Ertesi gün 25 Nisan 1974 saat 12.15 de Zeca
Afonso'nun Ulusal radyo kanalında seslendirdiği Grandola, Villa Morena adlı şarkısının çalınmasıyla verilen gizli
sinyalle de Silahlı Güçler Hareketi darbeye girişti. MFA'nın elindeki kuvvetler stratejik noktaları ele geçirdi.
Radyolardan ilan edilen sokağa çıkma yasağına rağmen halk darbecileri desteklemek için sokağa indi.
Askerlerin ele geçirdikleri stratejik noktalardan biri olan Lizbon Çiçek Pazarı'nda bolca bulunan karanfillerin
silah ve tank namlularınına sokulması ve bu görüntülerin tüm dünyaya duyurulması darbenin adını oluşturdu;
