A
s a surprise to the market, the Austrian fam-
ily-run enterprise W&H recently announced
its exclusive cooperation with the renowned
Swedish company Osstell to launch the inno-
vative new generation of Implantmed. The
new Implantmed impresses with numerous
optimised features designed to satisfy today’s
needs in implant dentistry, periodontal and maxillofacial surgery.
Implantmed is now available with an optional W&H Osstell ISQ
module to measure the stability of an implant and, thus, control
the healing period and optimise treatment times. We met W&H
CEO Peter Malata, Osstell CEO Jonas Ehinger and Professor
Neil Meredith from the University of Queensland, who originally
developed the resonance frequency analysis (RFA) method.
QWhat gave you the idea to begin cooperating and which
company will benefit more?
AMalata: You can speak of a triple win rather than a win-win
situation here. We are both family-run or midsize companies
with a strong innovative strain, so talks started very easily. With
the unique combination of our state-of-the-art technologies, we
can bring clear benefits to clinicians from all over the world and
to their patients.
Ehinger: Another advantage of proprietor-led businesses like
ours is that we accept each other’s individualistic approaches.
We join forces as a winning team, but we also respect the
individual history of each other.
W&H and Osstell: a perfect match

QWhat are the crucial benefits for the clinician?
AMalata: Implantmed stands for ease of operation. The
guiding principle behind the user interface of the new gen-
eration was to integrate innovative functions which support an
intuitive use. The aim is to make day-to-day work considerably
simpler for both the surgeon and the dental nurse. In addition,
the new surgical device presents a number of
further improvements, such as an extremely
small and lightweight motor, a wireless foot
control and the best weight-torque ratio you
will find in the market.
Ehinger: Optionally, the
new Implantmed can be
equipped with the Osstell
ISQ module as an efficient,
clinically proven and reli-
able solution for measuring implant
stability. Our implant stability diag-
nostics together with the sophisticated
Implantmed for the surgical placement pro-
vides a unique capability benefitting both
clinicians and their patients.
QWhy do you consider it vital for yourself and your patients to
measure implant stability and to monitor osseointegration?
AMeredith: Today, workflows in implant dentistry tend to be
quicker; patients demand chairside solutions, implantation
into extraction sites, immediate restorations or even immediate
loading protocols. With this, you not only need to know your
implant’s stability, but you had better also have good documenta-
tion as well, both for yourself and potentially for medico-legal
reasons. With the Osstell, you get proven diagnostic assurance
and great prognostic values for your treatment. Combined with
the Implantmed, which shows advanced ergonomic features like I
have never experienced before, both for myself and the assistants,
it is a perfect match for many of today’s challenges. Not to forget:
It is a great tool for teaching, for explaining the biological pro-
cess of implant stability and osseointegration to our students and
dentists in postgraduate training for dental implantology. And the
menu and guidance of the combined setting is extremely intuitive
and user-friendly.
Malata: For the first time, you have this unique combination of
insertion torque control and the initial-stability ISQ measure-
ment. Moreover, documentation of both of these parameters by
patient ID and tooth position facilitates a comprehensive and
more predictable treatment protocol. All these benefits are avail-
able with no additional complicated apparatus, instead providing
a most convenient working process and surgical environment.
The new W&H Implantmed with Osstell ISQ module is now
available from A-dec dealers Australia-wide. For more informa-
tion, contact A-dec Australia on 1800-225-010 or visit the W&H

T
he highly regarded W&H
Implantmed has become the
surgical implant motor of
choice for dental implantolo-
gists around the world since its
introduction in 2001.
Now there is a new model Implantmed,
building on the great qualities of the
original, but adding some class-leading
features to further enhance the success of
implants and oral surgery.
The Implantmed has achieved a strong
following for its predictable and reproduc-
ible outcomes, and intuitive features such
as easy-to-read icon-based touchpad and
pre-programmed settings, built-in thread
cutter function to reduce necrosis when
placing implants in hard bone and a large,
easy to use foot control.
These features allow the surgeon to
concentrate on the procedure and not
get bogged down in the complexity of
the equipment.
The new Implantmed is now available
with a unique system for assessing the sta-
bility of an implant, together with a new
high-tech, intuitive colour user interface
and a 24% more powerful motor deliv-
ering an impressive 80 Ncm at the surgical
site using the specialty W&H WS-75 L
implant handpiece.
There is also a new wireless foot con-
trol, which can be purchased as an option
or retrofitted at a later date and a rede-
signed coolant pump and irrigation tubing
connection which is easier to use and can
now be inserted under sterile conditions
for surgical procedures.
Improved implant safety
Placing an implant is a complex deci-
sion that must take into account all
key parameters and the patient’s risk
factors. The optional W&H Osstell ISQ
(Implant Stability Quotient) module for
the new Implantmed makes assessing the
success of the treatment more reliable.
This objective measurement helps the
surgeon to decide the optimum loading
time for an implant, based on previous
experience, supported by real data from
actual implants when placed.
The stability value measured by the
device helps improve success rates and
is a form of quality assurance. This non-
invasive measuring system can be used
to determine the primary stability of
implants and also observe the osseointe-
gration using secondary measurements to
determine the optimum time for loading
the implant. The ISQ value (ISQ scale of
1-100) is shown on the screen after taking
the measurement and is easy to interpret
thanks to data from numerous clinical
trials. The W&H Osstell ISQ module is an
optional extra and can be easily retrofitted
to the new Implantmed.
When the documentation function is
enabled, all implant insertion values,
such as defined device parameters, the
implant insertion curve, the Osstell ISQ
measurement and basic data such as the
documentation ID and tooth position, can
be saved to a USB stick.
Perfectly balanced
compact motor
The new console also has the shortest
motor on the market, which because of
its ergonomic shape and perfect balance
when coupled with an W&H contra-angle
handpiece allows the user to work for
extended periods without experiencing
hand fatigue.
Specialty handpieces
with LED+ light
The five new W&H straight and
contra-angle surgical handpieces with
patented hexagonal chuck systems and
LED+ now fully illuminate the surgical
site regardless of the motor speed.
A convenient removable spray clip
allows the coolant tube to be positioned on
either side of the instrument for optimum
visibility. The high-quality stainless steel
with its scratch-resistant coating means
that the surgical straight and contra-angle
handpieces have a particularly long service
life and are very sturdy. The instruments
can be dismantled for thorough cleaning
and are Thermo washer disinfectable and
sterilizable for optimum infection control.
The new W&H Implantmed with Oss-
tell ISQ module is now available from
A-dec dealers Australia-wide. For more
