90storesandthreeanchorstores:Montgomery
WaWard,Belk,andJ.B.White.
Thebuildinghadtwolevelsandamovie
theatreadjacenttotheactualbuilding.Sincethe
cityofAugustawasdividedintofourpartsby
householdfamilyincome,theplannersfailedto
realizewastheyfailedtoincorporateand
accomodatefortheareathattheywerein.
Southernareasofthecityweredeemedtohave
middlemiddletomoderateincomelevelswhereasto
theWestandCentralhadthehigherhousehold
incomebrackets.
Thestoresthatwereplacedinthemall
however,weremoresuitedforthehigher
incomefamilies,whichwasnotconsideredat
thetime.

5. Todaymanyshopingcentersandmallhavesteadilydeclinedphysicallyand
financiallyduetodemographics.Overtheyears,mallsdeclinefinanciallyprimarily
becauseoflocation.
WhenanewmallinAugustaemerged,Itwasplacedinagrowingandthrivingarea.
AsthemallweknowtodayastheAugustaMallgrew,UnfortunatelytheRegencyMall
filedforbankruptcytwotimeswithinfiveyears.Theowneralsowasdealingwith
lawsuitsfromtenantsreguardingthebuildingsafetyhazards.AsIhaveinterviewed
cityofficialsaboutfutureplanswiththedessertedbuilding,Theywantedtodemolish,
andmakeitintoacentralcityreservoir.
Whilethecityhasnotyetmadeafullagreementofwhatthebuildingcouldbe,this
gavemeachancetoproposetheareatobeamixedusebuildingtowherepeopleofall
agescouldbenefitfrom.Fromnewjobstoextracurriculars,Augustahasalwaysbeena
citythatembracedcultureandfinearts,withwellknownartistssuchasJesseNorman,
WyclefGordan,andRusselBrownwerebornandraisedinthecity.In2010,Thecity
wantedtostopfundingthesefineartsprogramswherepeoplecouldlearntoact,sing,
dance,andplay.
Withtheexistingbuildingwithover80,000squarefeet,Iwantedtocomeupwithan
ideatoupgradethebuilding,butexpandhorizonsforthecommunitywithurban
revitilization.

somethingalittlebitoutsidethebox,
andcanassistincoolingthebulding
duringthewarmerseasonclimate.
GREENSYSTEMDIAGRAM
Sincethebuildingisplacedneara
100-yearfloodline,itisimparative
tohaveprotectivemeasurestohelp
preventfuturefloodingaroundthe
boroughs.Installingcurbside
gardensmaybeasmallstep,butit
willhelppreventthewaterfrom
ovoverflowingsewersduringstorms.

16. Today,manymillinnialchildrenalsoknownaschildrenwhoareborninthe2000’sandabove,aremakingunsatisfactory
scoresinreadingandwritingstandardizedtesting.Withthenewageoftechnology,manychildrendonotreadregularhard
backbooksanymore.Inthisproject,Ihavecameupwithasolutiontonotonlymakeitfunforpeopleofallages,butdesign
somethingthatwillaccomodatethenewtechnologychildrencanlearnfrom.Thisportablelibrarywillcomeequippedwith
tablets,computers,andaninteractiveroofgardenalongwithseatingatdifferentlevels.Itcantraveltojustabout...

19. Thisedgeismostlyusedasawaitingareafor
informaltransportvehicles,suchasminibuses,
whichareknowinSouthAfricaas“Taxis”or
“combis”.Thisindustryisorganizedthroughthe
TaxiAssociations,butremainsunregulatedin
termsofpick-upanddropofflocationpointsin
thecity.Thetaxisareparkedonbothsidesofthe
ststreet,andastheywait,manyofthemarebeing
washedbydrivers.Thisactivityresultsinthe
streetsbecomingfloodedwithwater.
Althoughitisunclearastowherethewater
wasbeingsourced,butthelocalvendorsonthe
sidewalkswereaffected.Thetradestandsonthe
sidewalkswereplacesoftradeofferinggoods,
food,andbusinesssuchasshoerepair.These
activitieshugtheedgesaroundthemain
cemetaryentrance.Thebuildingsthatare
neededneededtobepreservedondifferentedgeswill
beaddressedbystudentteamsworking
together.
Thebuildingproposedwillbeathreestorey
withthefirstfloorbecomingarecyclecenter,
andtheremainingfloorswillbecomesingle
residentialhousing.

Thedesignchallengewastoaccomodatethe
trianglularsite,alongwiththepresereved
nearbybuildings.Wewereonlyabletowork
withalmost35-40%ofthesite.Theintentof
ourdesignwastoincreasewalkablilityforthe
residentsandvistorsandalsocontinuethe
culturalaspectofthearea.Wewereinstructed
totodesignstudiolayoutsforoursitein
particulartostaywithinthepropertylines
witha10ftsetback.

22. Withthebuiltstructureonthefarendofthecorner,Wehaveanareaforpeopletogatherandsellthier
goods.Theexterioropengardenspaceforpeopletogatherandenjoytheparkcouldhelprelievesome
pressurewithinthestreetcornerstoallowabetterflowofpedestriantraffic.
