According to Deﬁnitive Healthcare's Hospitals and IDNs platform, there were more than 7,200
active U.S. hospitals in 2017. This includes facilities such as short- and long-term acute care,
critical access, psychiatric, VA, DOD, and rehabilitation hospitals as well as faith-based
non-medical care facilities.
However, according to The American Hospital Association (AHA) there are only 6,200 active
U.S. hospitals in 2017, an increase from 2016, when the AHA reported a total of 5,534 active
hospitals. It has been reported that this growth is attributed to a shift in AHA hospital
classiﬁcation rather than new facilities opening. Hospitals counted in the AHA list are generally
community hospitals, including short- and long-term acute care, rehabilitation, and other
specialty facilities.

Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN is ranked No. 1 on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll. It is nationally ranked in 15

conditions. It is a general medical and surgical facility. What became the Mayo Clinic was founded in 1889 in
Rochester, Minnesota. The Mayo Clinic opened hospitals in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1986 and Scottsdale,
Arizona, in 1987. The Mayo Clinic Health System was established in 1992 and owns 19 hospitals in Minnesota,
Wisconsin and Iowa. The Mayo Clinic School of Medicine is the teaching arm of the Mayo Clinic. The hospital's

Mayo Clinic in Arizona and Arizona State University ﬁrst formed a partnership in 2002. Among the ﬁrst
initiatives was the development of the ASU College of Nursing and Health Innovation -Mayo Clinic Campus
program, allowing cohorts of 20-30 senior nursing students to complete their clinical training on the Mayo
campus instructed by Mayo Clinic nursing faculty. Of this group of highly ranked graduates, more than 55% are
hired at Mayo Clinic. From that initial collaborative effort, additional programs have materialized in the form
of a joint Seed Grant Program, a host of dual degree opportunities, cutting-edge research collaborations and
other expansive, shared projects. In the summer of 2010, the relationship became Mayo Clinic enterprise-wide
and in 2016, the Mayo Clinic and ASU Alliance for Health Care was formed.

The main buildings on campus are the Cannaday Building, the eight-story Davis Building, the Mangurian
Building and the Mayo Building, which includes the hospital. The Bundy Cafe and Atrium and Mayo Clinic
Pharmacy are located on the main ﬂoor of the Davis Building. Small cafés are in the Cannaday and Mangurian
buildings. The gift shop is in the Cannaday Building. The Cannaday, Davis and Mayo buildings are connected by
an enclosed walkway.
Laboratory research is conducted in the Birdsall Medical Research Building, which is devoted to neurological
diseases such as Alzheimer's, and the Griffin Cancer Research Building, which focuses on cancer research.
The West Campus is where patients will ﬁnd the Mayo Clinic Dialysis Center and the Basso Building, which
houses Mayo Clinic's Sleep Center. The West Campus also includes the Gabriel House of Care and Community
Hospice of Northeast Florida.

is a general medical and surgical facility. It is a teaching hospital. Mass General, founded in 1811, is a teaching
hospital for Harvard Medical School, and almost all its physicians are on the medical school faculty. Mass
General has the country’s largest hospital-based research program, which takes place across more than 30

conditions. It is a general medical and surgical facility. It is a teaching hospital. The Johns Hopkins Hospital, located in
Baltimore, was founded in 1889 and is the teaching hospital for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The Johns
Hopkins Health System was created in 1986, and 10 years later, it joined with the medical school to create Johns Hopkins
Medicine. Five other hospitals, including the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, are part of the
Hopkins Health System. The main campus includes the Brady Urological Institute, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, Sidney
Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and Wilmer Eye Institute. The emergency department features a dedicated pediatric

Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Howard County General Hospital has been serving
the community since July 1973. Our mission, "Provide the highest quality care to improve the health of our entire community
through innovation, collaboration, service excellence, diversity and a commitment to patient safety" is carried through in all
that we do.
Howard County General Hospital is a private, not-for-proﬁt, community health care provider, governed by a
community-based board of trustees. Opened in 1973, the original 59-bed, short-stay hospital has grown into a
comprehensive acute care medical center with 245 licensed beds, specializing in women’s and children’s services, surgery,

Suburban Hospital is a community-based, not-for-profit hospital serving Montgomery County and the surrounding area
since 1943. On June 30, 2009, Suburban Hospital became a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine. The designated trauma center
for Montgomery County, Suburban Hospital is affiliated with many local healthcare organizations, including the National
Institutes of Health.
History: On December 13, 1943, Suburban Hospital opened its doors as a 130-bed hospital constructed to accommodate the
expanding World War II military population in rural Montgomery County, Maryland. In its first full year, the small facility,
consisting of several one-story cottages, admitted 3,000 patients and had an operating budget of $13,000.
In 1950, the hospital was purchased by the community from the federal government for $125,000. During the late 1950s, the
hospital experienced a severe shortage of beds, requiring administrators to enclose sun porches and convert clinic space to
accommodate patients. To alleviate the overflow of patients, the Suburban Hospital Association developed a master facility
plan to construct three new wings over the next decade.
Today, 75 years after it was established, Suburban eagerly anticipates the benefits of its campus transformation and new
clinical addition. A member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, the hospital is distinguished by a cutting-edge stroke program; level
II trauma center designation; centers of excellence in cardiac care, orthopedics, neurosciences and oncology; state-of-the-art
diagnostic and treatment tools; and affiliations with world-class institutions such as the National Institutes of Health.

Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital (BWFH) is a 171 bed non-proﬁt, community teaching hospital located
in Jamaica Plain, just 3.4 miles from the Longwood medical area, and across the street from the Arnold
Arboretum. Founded in 1900, BWFH has a long history of meeting the health care needs of the residents of
southwest Boston and surrounding suburbs. We offer comprehensive medical, surgical and psychiatric care as

It was the nation’s first teaching hospital. Penn Presbyterian Medical Center was founded in 1871 and merged with the University of
Pennsylvania Health System in 1995. The health system is now known as Penn Medicine and includes three Philadelphia hospitals
plus three others in the region. Penn Medicine is building a facility called The Pavilion near the Hospital of the University of
Pennsylvania, with a projected opening in 2021. In the Abramson Cancer Center, the Center for Personalized Diagnostics connects
pathologists and oncologists to examine the gene information from patients in order to devise more effective treatment. The Basser
Center is the first facility dedicated to research and treatment of BRCA cancers, where hereditary gene mutations can lead to breast,
ovarian, pancreatic and other kinds of the disease. The highly ranked Penn Kidney Medicine division offers a wide range of treatment,
including the Kidney Stone Clinic, Lupus Nephritis Clinic and Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program. The Comprehensive
Hypertension Center was the third in the U.S. to be certified by the American Society of Hypertension as a Designated Comprehensive
Hypertension Center. Penn Medicine has been part of innovations that include the pneumonia vaccine, total intravenous feeding and
the discovery of the Philadelphia chromosome, a milestone in cancer research.

Houston Methodist Baytown opened in 1948 as San Jacinto Memorial Hospital. The hospital became part of
Houston Methodist in 1983 and has taken pride in providing comprehensive, unsurpassed care to the region.
The current hospital expansion includes a new outpatient center, increased number of beds and a new
emergency department. “As one of the area’s top employers, our dedicated team of physicians, nurses and
staff is proud to care for our growing community,” said Bernard.
Two other Houston Methodist hospitals are changing their names to better align with their communities.
Houston Methodist St. John Hospital will change to Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital, and Houston
Methodist St. Catherine Hospital will change to Houston Methodist Continuing Care Hospital.
A little more than ﬁve years ago, The Methodist Hospital System changed its name to Houston Methodist to
better align the system with the areas it serves and to differentiate itself from other “Methodist” hospitals
around the country.
“We hope these new names will help more patients discover Houston Methodist and everything we have to
offer,” said Marc Boom, M.D., CEO and president of Houston Methodist. “We continue to be excited about these
hospitals bringing leading medicine to their neighborhoods.”
