2. INTRODUCTION
With a PhD in political science from the University of California,
San Diego, Sharyn O'Halloran works as George Blumenthal
Professor of Political Economy and Professor of International and
Public Affairs at Columbia University in New York City. When not
instructing students, Sharyn O'Halloran enjoys staying active and
has participated in several races, including the New York City
Marathon.
When the first New York City Marathon was organized in 1970 in
Central Park, only 127 entrants participated, with 55 men
finishing. Over the years the race has evolved, and in 2015 the
event formed a year-round partnership with Tata Consulting
Services (TCS). In 2016, the TCS New York City Marathon saw
51,388 runners finish, which was a record for the event and made
it the largest marathon in the world.

During that race, Ghirmay Ghebreslassie of Eritrea became the
youngest male winner in its history, while Kenya’s Mary Keitany
earned the win on the women’s side, marking the third time in a
row she crossed this race’s finish line first.
As of March 2, 2017, 16,211 runners had received acceptance
into the 2017 TCS New York City Marathon, with 50,000 expected
to finish the event again this year. The marathon had 98,247
applications for the post-acceptance drawing, which is an
increase of 20 percent from 2016. Runners receive guaranteed
entry through several avenues, while non-guaranteed entrants
received entry into the drawing. Potential runners can register to
participate with more than 350 charity partners, as 9,000 runners
raised a record-breaking $36.1 million in 2016. The 47th running
of the marathon is scheduled for November 5, 2017.
