 Involved in academia for almost two decades, Sharyn
O'Halloran works as the George Blumenthal Professor of
Political Economy and Professor of International and
Public Affairs at Columbia University in New York City.
Dedicated to helping others, Sharyn O'Halloran regularly
works with several charitable endeavors, one of which is
New York Appleseed, Inc.
New York Appleseed pursues access and fair distribution of
resources for schools and neighborhoods in and around
New York City. The nonprofit organization works closely
with parent groups, government officials, and community
advocates to locate regional inconsistencies and establish
positive solutions.

3. New York Appleseed
 This branch is one of 17 social justice centers across the
country and in Mexico.
In September 2016, New York Appleseed brought in
students from Epic NEXT Theatre Ensemble. These
students gathered at P.S. Roberto Clemente and performed
“Laundry City” for District 1 community members. The
performance focused on educational segregation in New
York City. After the performance, students and audience
members participated in a discussion about the play’s
theme. Students involved in the ensemble are paired with
professional artists, and these artists in turn mentor the
students during the school year.
