5. PENDAHULUAN
Mencari lowongan dan proyek penerjemahan boleh dibilang
susah-susah mudah. Susah, karena tidak seperti profesi di industri jasa
lainnya, lowongan kerja di bisnis terjemahan relatif jarang dipublikasikan
dan proses rekrutmennya pun cenderung tertutup.
Banyak biro penerjemah yang lebih mengandalkan rekrutmen
internal, yaitu memanfaatkan jejaring penerjemah yang ada, untuk
memenuhi kebutuhan stafnya. Mereka memilih bersikap pasif, yaitu
menunggu penerjemah yang melamar, daripada agresif mencari dan
merekrut penerjemah.
Namun demikian, berdasarkan pengalaman penulis selama ini, ada
cukup banyak tempat sebenarnya yang bisa dijadikan sebagai sumber
informasi lowongan kerja penerjemah. Tapi satu hal yang mesti diingat
adalah Anda harus terus bergerak dan jangan pernah berhenti mencari.
Sekali saja berhenti, akan sulit bagi Anda untuk memulainya
kembali. Ibarat sebuah mesin, energi yang dibutuhkan saat mesin
sedang bergerak jauh lebih sedikit dibandingkan ketika baru mulai
dinyalakan. Begitu mesin dimatikan, dibutuhkan energi yang sangat
banyak untuk membuatnya hidup kembali. Semakin lama berhenti, akan
semakin sulit untuk menyalakannya kembali.
Demikian pula dengan mencari kerja sebagai penerjemah. Sekali
Anda berhenti, akan sulit bagi Anda untuk memulainya kembali. Anda
akan merasa nyaman dengan situasi sekarang. Itu sebabnya, banyak
anak-anak muda yang berhenti mencari lowongan kerja, pada akhirnya
gagal sama sekali mendapatkan pekerjaan. Karenanya, jika Anda benar-
benar ingin memperoleh pekerjaan, kuncinya hanya satu: jangan pernah
berhenti mencari.
Sampai kapan?
Sampai Anda mendapatkan pekerjaan!
Kisah Majnun. Ada sebuah cerita kecil tentang Majnun. Suatu hari
seorang sufi melihat Majnun tengah mengayak tanah di jalanan dan
bertanya kepadanya, ”Majnun, apa yang sedang engkau cari?”

Sang sufi bertanya lagi, ”Apakah engkau berharap akan dapat
menemukan Layla di situ?”
”Aku mencarinya kemana-mana,” kata Majnun, ”dengan harapan
akan menemukannya di suatu tempat.”
Sama seperti memancing ikan, mencari kerja juga membutuhkan
semangat, ketekunan, kesabaran, dan kegigihan. Selama Anda masih
duduk di tepi sungai dan selama mata kail Anda masih terapung di atas
air, selalu ada harapan suatu saat nanti akan ada ikan yang terjerat
umpan Anda. Tapi manakala mata kail telah diangkat dari dalam air, dan
kailnya pun telah tersandar di dinding, apakah mungkin akan ada ikan
yang menghampiri Anda?
Hal ini mirip dengan mengambil bola hitam di antara sekumpulan
bola merah. Selama Anda terus mengambili bola-bola tersebut, selalu
ada harapan Anda akan mendapatkan bola hitam meskipun Anda
mungkin beberapa kali salah mengambil bola merah.
Oleh karena itu, sekali lagi, hal yang harus selalu Anda ingat pada
saat mencari kerja sebagai penerjemah adalah jangan pernah berhenti
mencari. Tidak ada yang tahu kapan saat yang ditunggu-tunggu itu tiba.
Tidak ada seorangpun yang mampu menebak di surat lamaran keberapa
Anda akan diterima kerja. Anda bisa saja berhenti mencari setelah
mengirimkan dua puluh lebih surat lamaran. Padahal boleh jadi pada
surat lamaran kedua puluh satulah Anda akan menemukan bidang
pekerjaan yang sesuai. Ingat, kesempatan yang terlewatkan sama
dengan kesempatan yang hilang.
Ada lima tempat yang dapat Anda jadikan rujukan untuk mencari
informasi lowongan dan proyek penerjemahan, salah satunya adalah
dengan mengirimkan langsung berkas lamaran ke biro penerjemah atau
perusahaan yang dituju. Sekalipun saat itu belum tersedia lowongan,
tidak ada salahnya jika Anda mengirim berkas lamaran kepada mereka.
Banyak orang-orang yang berhasil mendapatkan kerja dengan cara
seperti ini. Pasalnya, dunia kerja saat ini, lebih-lebih lagi di sektor swasta
benar-benar dinamis. Hampir setiap beberapa bulan sekali terjadi
pergantian pegawai karena berbagai sebab dan alasan. Ada yang
7. mengundurkan diri dari jabatannya, ada yang pindah ke tempat lain, dan
ada juga yang dikeluarkan dari pekerjaannya. Jadi, meskipun saat itu
belum dibuka lowongan, dapat dipastikan cepat atau lambat mereka
akan membukanya juga.
Apabila berkas lamaran Anda sudah masuk lebih dahulu, hal ini akan
sangat menguntungkan bagi Anda dan perusahaan. Anda diuntungkan
karena nama Anda akan muncul paling atas di dalam daftar mereka.
Sementara perusahaan juga untung karena mereka tidak perlu
mengeluarkan dana untuk membuka iklan lowongan kerja di surat kabar
maupun internet yang tentunya memakan biaya yang tidak sedikit.
Buku ini berisi daftar 100 biro penerjemah terbesar di dunia dilihat
dari pendapatannya pada tahun 2016. Menurut laporan lembaga riset
Common Sense Advisory, permintaan terhadap jasa bahasa dan
teknologi pendukungnya tumbuh 5,52 % per tahun. Pasar global jasa
bahasa dan teknologi pendukungnya mencapai US$ 40,27 miliar pada
tahun 2016 dan akan meningkat menjadi US$ 45 miliar pada tahun 2020.

Setelah menemukan lowongan kerja yang sesuai, hal berikutnya yang
harus Anda lakukan adalah menyusun dan mengirim berkas lamaran
secepat mungkin.
Berkas lamaran ini biasanya dibuat dalam bentuk tercetak dan
dikirim melalui pos. Namun saat ini semakin banyak perusahaan yang
mengharuskan calon pelamarnya untuk mengirim berkas lamaran secara
elektronik, melalui email. Apapun bentuknya, pada dasarnya keduanya
sama saja.
Secara umum, berkas lamaran terdiri dari tiga bagian, yaitu:
1) Surat lamaran,
2) CV atau resume,
3) Dokumen.
Fungsi berkas lamaran ini sangatlah penting karena hampir
separuh kegagalan atau keberhasilan Anda ditentukan di sini. Jadi,
usahakan untuk membuatnya serapih dan seprofesional mungkin. Selain
berfungsi sebagai penyampai kepada pihak perusahaan bahwa Anda
berminat mengisi posisi yang dibutuhkan, berkas lamaran juga harus
mampu meyakinkan mereka bahwa Andalah orang yang tepat untuk
menempati posisi tersebut. Mirip dengan iklan, Anda harus bisa
”menjual” diri Anda sehingga pihak perusahaan tertarik dan mau
”membeli” bakat serta kemampuan Anda.
Surat lamaran
Ada beberapa poin penting yang harus diingat ketika membuat surat
lamaran, yaitu:
1) Kenali kebutuhan perusahaan. Cobalah untuk mencari tahu hal-hal
apa saja yang dicari oleh perusahaan. Orang seperti apa yang mereka
inginkan serta keahlian apa saja yang mereka butuhkan. Cari tahu
tentang hal itu dari iklan lowongan kerja mereka. Selanjutnya,
tonjolkan hal itu di dalam surat lamaran Anda. Tunjukkan kepada
mereka kalau Anda sanggup memberikan apa yang mereka butuhkan.
10. 2) Gaya bahasa yang digunakan hendaknya formal tapi tidak dibuat-
buat. Hindari memakai bahasa yang tidak formal, dingin, kaku, dan
tidak alami. Jangan terlalu detil, cukup mencantumkan informasi yang
penting-penting saja. Singkat tapi padat. Jangan lupa, tunjukkan kalau
Anda merasa antusias dan bersemangat untuk mengisi posisi
tersebut.
3) Pastikan Anda mengetiknya dengan rapih menggunakan komputer.
Jangan sekali-kali memakai tulisan tangan kecuali jika pihak
perusahaan sendiri yang memintanya. Surat lamaran hendaknya
dibuat tidak terlalu panjang, tapi juga jangan terlalu pendek. Cukup
satu halaman A4 dengan jarak spasi 1,5 atau dua. Jenis huruf yang
dipilih pun jangan yang aneh-aneh. Pilihlah jenis huruf yang standar
dan formal seperti Times New Roman atau Arial dengan ukuran font
11 atau 12 ppt.
Secara garis besar, ada lima komponen penting di dalam surat
lamaran, yaitu:
1) Alamat Anda selaku pengirim surat,
2) Tempat dan tanggal pembuatan surat,
3) Nama dan jabatan pihak yang dituju berikut nama dan alamat
perusahaannya,
4) Isi surat,
5) Nama dan tanda tangan Anda di akhir surat.
Sebelum dicetak, pastikan tidak ada ejaan yang salah di dalamnya.
Periksa berulang-ulang sampai Anda yakin betul semuanya sudah tertulis
dengan benar. Pada alinea pertama di bagian isi surat, Anda harus
mencantumkan tempat dan tanggal dibukanya lowongan kerja tersebut
berikut posisi yang diinginkan. Kemudian pada alinea kedua dan ketiga,
tuliskan apa alasan Anda melamar di posisi tersebut. Mengapa Anda
merasa mampu dan layak menempati posisi tersebut. Keahlian apa saja
yang Anda miliki, khususnya yang relevan dengan posisi tersebut.
Surat lamaran memiliki peranan yang sangat penting di dalam
proses melamar kerja. Jadi, usahakan untuk membuatnya serapih dan
seteliti mungkin. Jika surat lamaran Anda terlihat kotor, tidak rapih,
11. kurang bersemangat, dengan susunan gaya bahasa yang tidak teratur,
pihak perusahaan tentunya akan merasa ragu-ragu menerima Anda.
Lebih-lebih lagi jika posisi yang dilamar membutuhkan kerapihan,
ketelitian, dan keteraturan
Ada dua jenis surat lamaran. Pertama, surat lamaran yang ditulis
dalam bahasa Indonesia, dan kedua, surat lamaran yang ditulis dalam
bahasa Inggris. Keduanya pada dasarnya sama, baik dalam isi maupun
bentuknya. Bedanya hanya pada jenis bahasa yang digunakan.
Surat lamaran yang dikirim harus ditulis dalam bahasa Inggris jika
informasi lowongan kerjanya juga memakai bahasa Inggris. Hal ini
biasanya sekaligus akan menjadi tes pertama yang dilakukan oleh
perusahaan untuk menguji kemampuan bahasa Inggris Anda.
CV (CURRICULUM VITAE)
Komponen kedua yang harus ada pada berkas lamaran adalah CV,
resume, atau daftar riwayat hidup Anda.
CV (curriculum vitae) adalah sebuah uraian singkat tentang diri
Anda dan hal-hal yang pernah Anda lakukan. Peranan CV sangat
penting, karena sesudah surat lamaran, hal kedua yang akan dilihat oleh
perusahaan adalah CV Anda. Perusahaan akan menilai Anda
berdasarkan CV yang Anda buat. Sebuah CV yang baik tidak hanya
sekedar menyediakan keterangan tentang diri Anda, tapi juga harus
mampu mempromosikan kelebihan dan keunggulan Anda.
CV umumnya terdiri dari delapan bagian, yaitu:
1) Biodata,
2) Pendidikan,
3) Kursus/Pendidikan Tambahan
4) Kegiatan Ekstrakurikuler,
5) Pengalaman Organisasi,
6) Keterampilan,
7) Pengalaman Kerja,
8) Prestasi yang pernah diraih.
12. Berikut ini adalah hal-hal yang harus diingat pada saat membuat CV:
1) Usahakan untuk membuatnya serapih mungkin. Ketik dengan
menggunakan komputer maksimal dua halaman A4. Pilih jenis huruf
yang formal, misalnya Times New Roman atau Arial dengan ukuran
font 11 atau 12 ppt dan jarak spasi 1,5 atau dua.
2) Cantumkan informasi yang penting-penting dan relevan saja. Anda
tidak perlu menuliskan semua kisah hidup Anda di dalam CV. Cukup
yang berhubungan dengan bidang pekerjaan yang dilamar. Pilihlah
keahlian dan pengalaman yang menunjang posisi yang dilamar.
3) Hampir sama seperti iklan tertulis, CV juga harus mampu ”menjual”
diri Anda dengan baik. Anda harus dapat meyakinkan pihak
perusahaan untuk menerima Anda. Bahwa semua keterampilan dan
kemampuan yang Anda miliki bisa menguntungkan pihak
perusahaan. Bahwa Andalah orang yang mereka cari dan butuhkan
untuk mengisi lowongan yang tersedia. Cobalah untuk mencari tahu
apa yang diinginkan oleh perusahaan. Apa saja yang mereka cari. Tipe
pegawai seperti apa yang mereka butuhkan. Kemudian, berikan
semuanya itu kepada mereka. Tunjukkan kepada mereka bahwa
Andalah orang yang mereka cari. Jika perusahaan menginginkan
karyawan yang mempunyai kemampuan komunikasi yang baik atau
memiliki keterampilan komputer dan bahasa yang bagus, tunjukkan
hal itu kepada mereka di dalam surat lamaran dan CV Anda. Cobalah
untuk melihat segalanya dari sudut pandang perusahaan.
RESUME
Resume pada dasarnya hampir sama seperti CV. Bedanya adalah isinya
lebih ringkas dan lebih padat.
Ada dua jenis resume, yaitu:
1) Resume fungsional
2) Resume kronologis.
Resume fungsional adalah resume yang menitik-beratkan pada
keterampilan yang dimiliki. Urutan resume ini disusun berdasarkan nilai
kepentingannya berikut contoh pekerjaan yang pernah dilakukan.
13. Adapun resume kronologis, yang saat ini banyak dipakai, menitik-
beratkan pada pengalaman kerja calon pelamar yang urutannya disusun
secara terbalik. Itu artinya, pengalaman kerja terakhir ditempatkan di
bagian atas, sedangkan yang pertama diletakkan di bagian bawah.
Sama seperti halnya surat lamaran, CV atau resume juga harus
ditulis dalam bahasa Inggris jika iklan lowongan kerjanya memakai
bahasa Inggris. Formatnya sama seperti versi bahasa Indonesia.
Bedanya hanya pada jenis bahasa yang digunakan.
Pilihan menggunakan CV atau resume tergantung pada kebutuhan
dan persyaratan yang diminta oleh perusahaan. Ada perusahaan yang
lebih menyukai CV, ada juga yang lebih menyenangi resume. Jika tidak
disebutkan di dalam iklan, disarankan untuk mengirimkannya dalam
bentuk CV.
CV atau resume adalah kesan pertama Anda. Kesan pertama ini
sangatlah penting. Pada waktu membuat CV atau resume, menurut Ryan
Stephenson, konsultan karir ternama asal Inggris, Anda harus sungguh-
sungguh mempertimbangkan faktor ”WIIFM” (What’s in it for me?) atau
”Apa untungnya bagi saya.” Apa yang akan didapatkan oleh perusahaan
jika menerima Anda sebagai pegawainya.
CV atau resume harus berisi keterampilan dan pengalaman kerja
yang dibutuhkan oleh perusahaan. Cobalah untuk mengingat-ingat
kembali semua keahlian dan pengalaman yang Anda miliki. Apa saja
kemampuan yang Anda miliki? Seberapa hebat kemampuan Anda di
bidang tersebut? Tuliskan semuanya itu dalam satu bentuk kalimat yang
konkrit, jika perlu dengan hitungan angka-angkanya. Dengan demikian,
perusahaan akan bisa mengukur nilai kepentingan (value) Anda.
14. BAB 2. CONTOH SURAT LAMARAN PENERJEMAH
Dibanding surat lamaran biasa, surat lamaran untuk penerjemah
freelance atau surat penawaran (bid/quote) proyek penerjemahan
biasanya lebih singkat dan padat.
Anda tidak perlu berpanjang lebar menceritakan tentang diri Anda,
tapi langsung ke intinya. Hal ini dikarenakan biro penerjemah, terlebih
yang bonafid, biasanya menerima banyak surat lamaran dari penerjemah
setiap harinya. Jadi mereka umumnya hanya akan membaca cepat saja
surat lamaran yang masuk. Jadi pastikan surat lamaran Anda ringkas dan
menyediakan informasi yang dibutuhkan oleh biro penerjemah, yaitu
bahasa yang ditawarkan, spesialisasi, pendidikan, pengalaman, kapasitas,
dan tarif terjemahan. Lebih bagus lagi jika Anda juga melampirkan
sampel terjemahan.
Berikut ini adalah beberapa contoh surat lamaran penerjemah
freelance dan surat penawaran (bid/quote) proyek penerjemahan:
