The market trend and prediction shows that CSP might be growing at a very high
rate. But IP filing shows a whole different story. As you can see, 2011 onwards the
patent filing has decreased in CSP at an alarming rate, giving birth to the question
that where innovation is actually happening in the domain or not.
From what we could uncover, we think that
the major reason behind the dip in patent
activity of CSP domain is the overproduction
of solar panels by Chinese Manufacturers and
uncertain future prospects (in the year 2017)

With the bankruptcy of German leader Solar
Millennium and other companies, the
number of solar thermal power plant builders
continues to dwindle, leaving just a handful
of developers, including California’s
BrightSource Energy and SolarReserve,
Spain’s Abengoa and France’s Areva.(Source)

of strong pipeline of existing and

What is the number of current CSP power plants operating and under construction over the world?

The CIF (Climate Investment Fund) and
the WBG (World Bank Group) have
partnered around the goal of
supporting CSP installation in various
parts of the world. They have set up a
fund called Clean Technology Fund
(CTF) for this purpose.
From CTF, a total of $945 million (along
with additional $8.4 billion which is
expected to be added as co-financing)
is supporting early public and private
sector CSP projects in Chile, South
Africa, and the Middle East and
North Africa (MENA) region. Projected
generation capacity is 1.2 GW, or more
than one-fourth of the current global
CSP capacity.
Chile CSP market share is
predicted to witness 27% growth
on account of strong pipeline of
existing and potential projects.

At the World Economic Forum,
YATAGAN, a Joint Venture
created by BADR Investments,
announced plans for a US$ 425
million, 100 megawatt
concentrated solar power (CSP)
station, one of the largest in the
world, in Southern Jordan, and

sustainable transparent
regulatory framework to allow
for such projects in Jordan.
