Film Opening Analysis
Horror and Romcom
Daniella McHugh
Carrie does not begin with credits right way, the first image seen is the title of the film
and foreshadows that their will be lots of blood and death in the film as the title is
blood red and looks like blood as it moves off the title. The menacing sounds in the
non - diegetic sounds connote that something bad is going to happen. This is followed
by an establishing shot of the house showing the current location, the house does not
seem to be in a highly populated area which heightens the fear as there is less chance
of escape.. The red and black theme continues as the film company is displayed on
screen and a scream is heard in the background which creates tone and a sense of fear.
Carrie
Shaky point of view shots are taken one after the other to create a sense of panic and
desperation and leaves space for tension and suspense of the reveal as the screaming
continues. It also makes it appear as though you yourself are looking around which
increases fear and anxiety of the audience. The camera stops on a door before again
crediting someone else which keeps the audience waiting making them antsy. This Pov
continues up the stairs.
Props such as the bible on the stair and the cross on the wall suggest religious aspects
to this film.
The tilt upwards reveals who is screaming but the angles obstruct the reason why as
they show mid shots and medium close ups of the women. Further increasing
suspense. The costume that the woman wears are white this suggest purity and can be
reflected by the bible and the prayers she says as she may want to be religiously pure.
The blood on the white sheets around her contradict this. Showing that some of her
purity is now tainted and unclean. The circular movement of the camera displays the
reasoning for her pain and creates a disorientating impact. The bump in her stomach is
now noticeable and also where the blood is coming from..
Following the long shot of her body there is a close up of her face showing her painful expression followed one
of somewhat relief. This relieves tension briefly. The cuts from her as a mid shot to her legs builds it up again as
this is done several times before shallow focus is used to actually show the baby. The next shot is a close up
showing her initial reaction to the child.Invasive ominous non-diegetic music that plays with emotions.
Horror Conventions
Minimal credits to maintain facade.
Constant suspense.
Dimly lit to create tone.
Slow paced to prolong build up of tension.
Suspenseful dramatic reveals.
He’s just not that into you
The first shot is a establishing shot of the park , lighting wise it appears realistic and
like how we experience light everyday. The simplistic writing of the production
company makes it the scene appear casual and relaxed. The non diegetic background
music comes seems curious and is more modern sounding which could be suggesting
the personality of the character. The continuous ambient sound sets the scene and
tone. Examples being children's laughter and trees whooshing in the wind. .
A long shot of the little girl is used to show that she is without company of those her
age. A voiceover of the main character begins before the boy appears showing that
there is a relation between the scene we are seeing and the main character. The little
girl wears simple clothes, this is to make her more relatable. The motion of the boy as
he approaches is within rhythm with the voiceover as the camera pans said movement.
Shot reverse shot of the children is used so we can see the reaction the little girl has to
the little boys actions and words. The non diegetic background music changes whilst
the girl is being insulted. This makes the music sound like it is in touch with the little
girl's emotions. The music becomes more heartfelt as she approaches someone who
makes her feel better
The voiceover acts as a call and response to what is being said within the opening
sequence. The characters are shown as as females who have developed and
overthought the initial idea of guys liking you if they ignore or bully you which in
itself is in relation to and aids the build up to the title of the film. The main shot types
used within this quick cut together part of the opening scene are master shots, long
shots , close ups, wide shots and two shots. They all display emotion and relation
between the characters and the situation.
The common font used for the title makes it seem more direct and relatable making
the film come across more realistic.
