Hermit crabs do not have a hard shell.
They are OVIPAROUS and lay eggs.
The baby crabs have soft abdomens. Other animals
can eat them.
Their body is soft and flexible.
They need a shell for protection
As they grow they move into bigger shells.
They normally choose a new shell the same shape
as the old one.
Size: The smallest is the Ecuadorian hermit crab
about 13 mm in length.
The biggest is the coconut crab which can be 1
metre long and weigh 4 kilos!
Food: They are scavengers and eat DEAD plants and animals.
They are CRUSTACEANS.
They have 2 eyes on eye stalks.
and 4 antennae….
They have 10 legs; 6 big legs for walking, at the
front, and 4 short legs at the back.
They have claws or pincers.
Life span: They live for between 2-3 months up to
30 years.
They are NOCTURNAL and are active at night.
They are social and can live in groups of up to 100.
