Blog Post: http://depressionhealinginsights.blogspot.com/2011/04/geographical-features-and-depression.html
These are symptoms of toxicity. Have individuals mark for each symptom or condition, etc. they have. Slide 8 has the key.
These are conditions that contribute to toxicity.
These are conditions that indicate toxicity.
These medications strongly contribute to toxicity. Jaundice indicates toxicity.
What is methylation?
In simple terms it is a process in which certain chemicals called ‘methyl groups’ are added to various constituents of proteins, DNA and other molecules. These are needed to keep them in good ‘working’ condition.
For example, if the antidepressant, ‘feel-good’ brain chemical serotonin is not methylated it will become inactive which in turns leads to depression! This is just one of the many ‘chemicals’ in the body that need to be methylated and if they are not can lead to serious health consequences.
Sulfation: Sulfation: Is a phase-II detoxification pathway that occurs in the liver and in which compounds that contain sulfur combine with components to remove them from the body. The sulphur acts like “fly paper” to help the body remove the toxins.
Ask participants to put a tally down for each answer that applies to them. The key is on the next slide.
This is very simplified, but it shows how B12, B6 and folate help keep the process of methylation running! The yellow “flowers” mark key nutrients Dr. Nedley has talked about. You see other critical neurotransmitters in this slide as well.
Very complicated, but if you study it a bit it helps one begin to understand why the food intake is so much more important than just taking vitamins. These cycles interlace and the end outcome is very related to beginning food intake. Healthy food intake will help with the yellow highlighted nutrients: Glutathione and Sulphur. (Note: Dr. Hyman did intravenous glutathione to help his body detox due to all the toxic exposure to formaldehyde, etc. in medical school.
From The UltraMind Solution. This chart shows genes found to contribute to depression. Notice that most of them are related to the body’s detoxification process. In the “How to improve its function” column, I have highlighted things we have talked about in the Nedley program.
ACE= Adverse Childhood Experiences (a gamut of possibilities, Nedley would call them “developmental hits”.) ACEs are a hot topic of late.
Add in the “flavor enhancers”, etc. (See the movie “Fed Up” to get a true picture of what many big food industry giants do.)
These next two slides are self-explanatory. I just highlighted those neurotransmitters we’ve talked about at least some in class. Spend some time pointing out counterfeits people may turn to in an effort to self-medicate since their neurotransmitters are low or off-balance. Really point out the “Supported by” column. Note that a high pH diet is reached by eating lots of healthy low glycemic vegetables and very little (or no) meat. Note that I would NOT use Benadryl as a way to calm down! This causes more toxicity! I would only use it as a last resort! Again, note how many in the “Supported by” column are in the Nedley program. Note: Q-96 is a supplement under the True Hope umbrella—most have heard about it. I don’t go into that.
Note: I would only do a high protein diet with PLANT PROTEINS. There is too much evidence that a high animal protein diet slow neurotransmitter production, etc.
Some may be feeling pretty overwhelmed by now, especially if they scored high on the quizzes. If it’s bad enough they should try to get some medical help. If that’s not possible, they need to follow the Nedley program religiously, read Hyman’s book and maybe look into food intolerances, and be patient and prayerful. Miracles do happen!
Foods that help the methylation/sulfation process: garlic, onions, cruciferous vegetables, plant-based proteins, broccli family: collards, kale, cabbage, kohlrabi, mustard green, rutabaga, turnips, bok choy, Chinese cabbage, arugula, horseradish, radish, wasabi, and watercress. Also fish, eggs, sunflower seeds, some herbs like milk thistle, etc.
True Hope products and other excellent vitamins are herbs can help the body detoxify if taken at the right time and in the right way. Some people have to do yeast detox, or metal detox (i.e. like flouride detox, etc.), fix their “leaky guts”, etc. before the vitamins will do anything. Hyman’s book, The UltraMind Solution gets into details about some of that.
Be determined, consistent, and be patient. It is so worth it in the end!
Notice how easy it is to get plant-based protein!
Summary: Our bodies can have toxic build-up due to exposures, foods, and genetic pre-disposition. This can make it more difficult for our bodies to produce the nutrition that creates the neurotransmitters and hormones we need to feel well, leading to depression, anxiety, etc. (Most with anxiety have a high need for detoxification!) In an effort to feel better, we may turn to addictive substances. This creates a vicious cycle—and Dr. Nedley shows us the way out of that vicious cycle. Hopefully this PowerPoint helps you understand why it is so important to do EVERY part of the Nedley program.
