Oracle VM on commodity HW and on Oracle Engineered Systems
The first part of this presentation gives an overview of OVM characteristics and functionality. The rest of the slides describe the following scenarios:
1) OVM on commodity Hardware
2) OVM on Oracle Database Appliance

Thanks to the Virtualization technology it has been possible:
To abstract the underneath HW and replace expensive SMP systems with
commodity hardware.
To dynamically and elastically allocate resources to the applications.
To live migrate servers on different HW even across data centers.
To reduce the time to market from days to minutes using pre-built VMs and
Templates.
To consolidate independent projects on the same infrastructure without
compromising performance, security and independent lifecycles.

Overview of OVMx86 2/2
OVM on Commodity HW & Engineered Systems7 3/27/2016
Oracle VM Server incorporates Xen
Hypervisor, developed and maintained as
free and open-source software. It runs as
most privileged domain (Dom0) on the hosts
which are part of the virtual server farm. The
hypervisor responsibilities include abstracting
elements from the physical machine, CPU
scheduling and memory management of all
Guest VMs. Oracle VM Server includes
Oracle VM Agent, responsible to
communicate with Oracle VM Manager.
Oracle VM Manager is a web based
management console, developed and
maintained by Oracle to administrate Oracle
VM Servers, VMs, Templates, ISO images etc.
Oracle VM Manager runs independently and
separately from the rest of OVM infrastructure
and it is not a mandatory components. In fact
the OVM farm can be entirely managed using
Xen commands.

OVM x86 onOracle Database environment
OVM on Commodity HW & Engineered Systems8 3/27/2016
For long time beyond all licensing restrictions, the usage of the virtualization has been
discouraged due to the non-optimal I/O performance.
Today Oracle is promoting OVM on its Top Database Engineered Systems (Exadata,
ODA) what has changed?
The implementation (starting from OVM 3.1) of the PCI device virtualization technology:
Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV).

SR-IOV is a PCI device virtualization technology that allows a single PCI device to
appear as multiple PCI devices on the physical PCI bus: the real physical device is
called Physical Function (PF) while the others are called Virtual Functions (VF). The
purpose of this is for the hypervisor to directly assign one or more of these virtual
functions to a virtual machine using Intel VT-D technology: the guest can use the virtual
function as any other directly assigned PCI device.

Why OVM ondatabase Engineered Systems?
OVM on Commodity HW & Engineered Systems15 3/27/2016
OVM on Oracle Database Appliance
– Oracle Database Licensing optimization
– Leverage HW utilization with Solution-in-a-Box
– Consolidate multiple Applications on one system
OVM on Oracle Exadata Machine
– Best Database Cloud environment with up to 64 Grid Infrastructure clusters
– Database Consolidation & Isolation with independent lifecycles.
– Dynamic resource allocation

OVM on Oracle Database Appliance
Unique OVM characteristics:
1) Dom Base is a privileged VM
with direct access to the shared
storage. This guarantees almost
native I/O performance to the
databases.
2) No Oracle VM Manager is
available, Xen commands have
been included on the oakcli CLI
framework.

OVM on CommodityHW & Engineered Systems17 3/27/2016
OVM on Exadata
Unique OVM characteristics :
1) Domain C<x> are privileged
VMs with direct access to the
InfiniBand network. This
guarantees almost native I/O
and Network communication
performance to the databases.
2) No Oracle VM Manager is
available at this date, Xen
commands should be used to
manage the virtualization layer.
