Developing early music video ideas
1. My early development ideas
I think the best way to develop my ideas is to look at music videos I already like and
somehow spin them into a web of my own. Also look at music I like that don't even
have videos because they may even be better for coming up to an original idea.
I've tried narrowing it down a bit but there's so many good music videos. Especially
the Guns N Roses videos. There's just so many I want to do so it all comes down to one
thing. What's the most realist one i'll be able to film. Because I have fully developed
ideas for ones I know I won't be able to film so it's hard.
2. I’m into a lot of different music so there's no way of narrowing it down like that but there
is another way. It's only early development so it doesn't need to be fully worked out but I
do need a little structure and this is how i'll do it.
I know I want a story with love and destruction. That quality comes from Rock. So I want a
little rock involved.
I know I like stylized shots and well thought out cinematography elements. Every shot
needs to contribute to the video, not just be a random shot that looks aesthetically
pleasing. Narrative is crucial.
I know I want perforce, both lip-syncing and acting.
I know I'm down for most types of music so as long as it holds power. Those songs that no
matter what you can feel your own story being incorporated into the rhythm. However
needs to hold a dramatic standpoint. There's no point having a video about two star
crossed lovers if the music is about making money and hating woman (every today rap
song)
3. So now I sort of know what I want I need to look at some music I like. Strait away I think of
Ryan Goslings Drive directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. The soundtrack to that was
amazing. The start of that film almost a Music video in itself.
In the first beat you get this amazing extreme wide shot of
Nighttime LA and you get this explosion of feelings. Feelings
Of wonder and fear for this dark and mysterious city.
Obviously this wouldn't pass as a music video as it lacks
vital properties but this is the effect I want to have on the
Viewer. The shot below is another powerful moment. We see this character dressed in his
armor, showing this bright yellow scorpion of
danger.
Kavinsky is the creator of
the music in the film. He
has his own music videos
he has created that spark
my interest.
4. I Love new 80s electro and that's exactly what Daft Punk is. They have there own french
house electro style music that they have been publishing for years. Recently they have
been working with big names like Pharrell Williams and The Weekend to get there music to
a wider audience. Along with there great music they have got some fantastic music videos
such as, Instant Crush, Get lucky and my favorite, Star Boy. Just a very well directed
music video. Only a few shots i'm not sure on but still a great bit of work. Bruno Mars has
also gone down the 80s music video style. However he’s only done this to capitalise on how
he looks and sounds like the new Michael Jackson. Even still I love the glamour rock
feeling you get when you watch these videos. As does the majority, seen in the amount of
views and downloads the songs have accumulated.
5. Another music video that holds a lot of power is Bruno Mars’s Gorilla. Very stylish lots of
power, lots of meaning, good final finish, music timing, on point and very well done story
telling. Very underrated music video. Again I like it because of its love and destruction.
The colouring is spot on as well. Uses of green and red to represent this evil power this
woman has over bruno's character. Then there's the shot of the woman burning his guitar
with quick cut edits flashing back and forth between the burning guitar and the girl
kissing Bruno. Showing that he’ll have to destroy his dreams in order to get to her. Its truly
a powerful video. The song by itself already holds well, the video just compliments it.
6. I now know the general forms and conventions I want to inhibit. I now need to go away
and look at songs that I feel could hold a good narrative and help contribute to the
structure of its meaning.
I’m definitely feeling the love and destruction whether that be a love for partnership or
love for a passion both will be destroyed the same. It's the law of attraction people like
negative things that are made out to be good because it makes it seem as though nothing
else matters apart from that moment which is desirable.
I feel I still need to research more before I start creating a narrative. I already have ideas
in my head I just need to look into it more. That way I can further progress by knowing
what genre i'll be aiming for and what my target audience will be.
