The medical world has recently taken a major step in its
battle against Alzheimer’s disease. Research conducted at
the University of South Australia in connection with
China’s Third Military Medical University has revealed that
Edaravone, a drug already being used to treat stroke
victims, may possibly slow the progression of Alzheimer’s
and its effects on a person’s cognitive functions. Currently
available in certain parts of Asia, Edaravone has primarily
been used to treat ischemic stroke.
3. However, recent studies performed on lab mice have
demonstrated the drug’s ability to improve memory
and learning capabilities in several different ways.
Professor Xin-Fu Zhou spoke on the Edaravone trials,
noting the fact that the key to defeating Alzheimer’s
comes in targeting multiple pathways simultaneously
in order to reduce symptoms and prevent the disease
from worsening. Among the various pathways
addressed by Edaravone is amyloid peptide. This
toxic substance is a major source of nerve cell
degeneration. Studies have shown that Edaravone can
successfully bind the toxin, neutralizing its harmful
effects on the brain.
