The Niger Delta is one of the most important wetland ecosystems in the world, home to over 31 million people. It has generated $600 billion for Nigeria since the 1960s but has also been severely polluted, with over 15 million barrels of oil spilled. Restoring the damaged Ogoni region alone could cost $1 billion and take 25-30 years. Local fishermen now have to travel long distances and still catch oil-soaked fish. The pollution has also had major political, economic, and health impacts for communities in the region.
