Satellite and cable have enabled faster television and internet connections by allowing the delivery of broadcast programming to consumers. Analog TV typically offered 5 channels while digital TV transmits signals that provide access to hundreds of channels. New technologies like HD, 3D, streaming, on-demand viewing and digital recorders have given consumers more control over what and when they watch television and movies.
2. We have a vast range of existing and
developing technologies in modern
television and film industries which are
growing more and more everyday. Here
is a look into some of the consumers,
how we use them & why we do.
3. • Satellite is a way we receive
television. It is usually received
with an outdoor antenna –
commonly a satellite dish.
• It’s usually set up with an external
set-top box or a satellite tuner.
Either way is an effective way to
receive either digital or analog
direct-broadcast satellite.
• Cable TV is another way we receive
television.
• Single cable distribution enables
the delivery of broadcast
programming.
• Without it, we wouldn’t have
multiple broadcast programming.
SATELLITE AND CABLE
• Together, they have enabled us to
get faster television and internet
connections.
• BT, Sky and Virgin are the leading
broadband connections in the
television and internet industry.
4. Analogue TV is usually a 5 channeled,
small television. The 5 television
channels are:
• BBC 1
• BBC 2
• ITV 1
• Channel 4
• Channel 5
• Digital TV transmitts signals
which are decoded or attached to a
television with analog sound and
analog video
• It also gives us a vast variety of
different channels to select from,
literally hundreds.
ANALOGUE AND DIGITAL
5. • Everyday, movies and television
programs are illegally downloaded
to watch at any time, whether its in
bed or on the go, technology has
allowed us to consume film and
television content.
• Television shows and films are
being posted to online websites to
even watch for free (illegally of
course).
• Most of these sites where you can
stream illegally have been closed
down, but there are still a lot out
there.
• Interactive television means that
the consumer can pause/rewind
live television. This is helpful in
case you need to desperately go to
the toilet but it’s a while till any
adverts – if there are any!
We can even catch up on shows that
we may have missed, this includes:
• BBC iPlayer
• 4od
• ITV Player
This shows evolution and more
freedom into what we can watch and
when we would like too.
INTERNET AND INTERACTIVE
6. • HD has changed the way we watch
television and films. We can
experience them in amazing
quality that we didn’t have 40
years ago. It means we can watch
television/films a lot more clearly.
• 3D is like a multiview display. It
changes the way we perceive
normal television. This is usually
accompanied with a set of 3D
glasses. It’s usually done with a 3D
active shutter system or a polarized
system – either way it could look
like the dinosaurs are really
coming for you!
HIGH DEFINITION (HD) AND 3D
7. • Pay per view means paying for
whatever you would like to watch.
This varies from subscribing to a
particular channel for a long period
of time to view something (it’s
usually sports or wrestling with
Sky/Virgin) to paying for a movie
to have on your system for 1 night.
Once the subscription has ran out,
you can either pay again for
another term or not bother.
• On Demand Viewing means you
will never miss your favourite
show, EVER. These are systems
where the viewer can choose when
to watch a selected program, rather
than waiting to watch it at the
specific time. This is mostly used
on Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Channel
4oD etc.

VIEWING
8. • Streaming is NOT downloading.
Providing you have an internet
connection, the viewer can watch
what they want, when they want.
Downloading is similar but once
downloaded they are able to keep
the media forever but downloading
is much more dangerous as it’s
illegal.
• Digital Recorders is something we
all use nowadays. It’s basically the
same as recording over old VHS
tapes whereas this will remain in
the safety of your television box. I
use this when I can’t watch
Keeping up With The Kardashians
because my dad is watching the
Discovery Channel, so I am able to
record KUWTK and can watch it
another time. I also don’t have to
worry about it being written over
because I can go to the “deleted
items” section.
