Amazon's acquisitions of Bookpages Ltd, Telebook, and IMDB provided access to new international markets in efficient ways. The Bookpages and Telebook acquisitions gave Amazon expertise in online bookselling in the UK and German markets respectively. The IMDB acquisition provided a repository of television and movie information that enhanced Amazon's content offerings. Overall, these acquisitions were economically sensible for Amazon as they allowed the company to enter new markets more quickly than establishing operations independently while also gaining local knowledge and resources in each country.
1. Please analyse Amazon’s M&A activity as described in Exhibits 1 and 2. What can we say about
the different sources of value creation in the acquisitions that Amazon has undertaken and the
extent to which these acquisitions make economic sense?
As Amazon took over the three main internet companies. It had a vision and value creation
approach behind these acquisitions.
Like in the case of Bookpages Ltd. That acquisition enabled Amazon to provide the same services,
and values to the UK market, which they had provided to US citizen. Furthermore, Bookpages Ltd
was one of the largest book selling online platform in the UK, over 1.2 million books, thus,
Amazon had resources and Bookpages had deep knowledge about UK markets.
Similarly, Telebook, the Geemoney's top online bookstore. Which had over 400,000 catalogs of
germanlanguage titles. was taken by Amazon, so that Telebook’s local expertise in online
bookselling in their country plus Amazon’s brand reputation and advancement in technology can
jointly put together to cover the market .
Likewise, the IMDB was taken by Amazon, as it had had a rich repository of television information
and movies over the internet. So that their huge platform could be utilized by providing them
their favorite books along with their movies.
If we look at the above three acquisitions, it had an economic sense . because had Amazon started
fresh setups in those countries would have been difficult to cope with the expense of setting new
businesses, in a new country, plus, facing their competition. Therefore, it was wise to save, time,
effort, energy, and get access to the markets by making the right decisions of acquisition.
