Statement 1
(to be broadcast on the social media for the general public)
In direct contradiction to the rich tradition of unity in diversity of our country, deliberate attempts are
being made frequently to create rifts in our society. Hysteria and an atmosphere of dread and social
tensions are on the rise with every passing day. We, the undersigned, are disturbed and concerned with
this unhealthy trend.
We believe in the values of peace, love, compassion and social amity. We also firmly believe that
dialogue is the only way to solve social problems. As such, we have drawn an action program; which, it is
important to note, has no connection with any organisation or political party or any leader; it involves all
of us.
The program is as under:
1. If you are in agreement with the sentiments expressed in the statement, please add your name to the
response and take the statement further to more people.
Alternatively
2. We may gather near the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in our locality in plain white clothes or
with a plain white cloth or a piece of white paper. We believe that the colour white represents purest
form of love. There shall be no speeches or sloganeering, or chanting, not even any discussion. If a
passer-by shows interest, let us share the statement (no. 2) with them. Peace will prevail and our
concern will be expressed solely through the symbol of love and nothing else.
* We request you to intimate the local Police of the proposed program and if the police refuse
permission, please cancel the program but do not disturb the law and order under any circumstances.
3. Those who are not able to attend this program, will post their photograph on the social media
wearing white clothes or holding a white cloth or a white paper in their hand.
* Once again, the entire exercise is totally voluntary. *
Thanks for the cooperation.
3. Statement 2 -
(A printed copy to be handed over to the public)
As we know, we are passing through a terrifying period today when people are being instigated to attack
each other in the name of religion amid an overbearing atmosphere of animosity. Skirmishes are being
engineered to create an all-pervading terror. The young generation is being drawn away from basic
issues like rising prices, unemployment, education and health and is being pushed into the inferno of
communal frenzy; all for the sake of gaining and holding onto power while the common man suffers the
blazing inflation and unemployment. Terror and insecurity are adding to his woes.
We find these conditions extremely distressing and have gathered here at the feet of our beloved
People's King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to express our distress. He was truly a King who held his
subjects' interests foremost and tried to foster an atmosphere of love, compassion and peaceful
coexistence. He never ever discriminated one religion from another and embraced all with the empathy
of a true guardian. He was a true Karta of the joint family of his people which included each and every
one of them irrespective of their caste and creed and faith.
Today we stand here clad in white or holding a white cloth or a white paper because we trust the White
projects peace and love. We want to give voice to our feeling of distress through the sole medium of
love and nothing else.
We firmly believe that whatever is their creed, all the citizens of this country are brothers and sisters
and we all must respect all the various religious beliefs and traditions in this country if we wish to
propagate peace and happiness. No man is perfect but viciousness and violence will never help to
overcome the imperfections. Love and dialogue are the means to move towards social harmony and a
better and more fulfilling life for one and all.
Look around you. This country is adorned with such a rich variety of faiths, tongues and cultural
practices. Mutual trust, love, compassion, tolerance form the very foundation on which has risen and
prospered the glorious composite culture through thousands of years. Fruits of acrimony, mistrust and
suspicion are always bitter and poisonous. Again, look around you and try to fathom who it is that is
sowing seeds of brutality and hatred amongst us.
Let's get together and bury the fake gulf between 'us' and 'them'. Let's build bridges of love and
dialogue. Let's talk, discuss and debate within the frame of our noble constitution and get over these
difficult times.
Let's live a peaceful, content and harmonious life.
