Six suspects were arrested in a joint operation across three provinces for their involvement in a R255 million fraud and corruption case related to an asbestos removal contract in the Free State province in 2014. The suspects, which include three senior government officials and three businessmen, face 60 charges including corruption, fraud, and money laundering. It is alleged that the contract was awarded through an fraudulent and corrupt procurement process, officials received gratification from the contracted company, and the department incurred unauthorized expenses over R255 million for services that were not properly specified in the existing contract. One suspect is still at large and the others are expected to appear in court on Friday.
