Touro Law Center will co-host a summer 2015 conference in China with Shanghai University of International Business and Economics to look at the little-known history of Jews who fled to Shanghai to escape persecution. The conference titled "Jews of Shanghai" will examine how Jews first immigrated to Shanghai in the mid-19th century and later in the early 20th century and 1930s-1940s to flee violence and oppression, and will provide an opportunity for Jewish and Chinese students to learn about each other.

2.  In recognition of the 60th anniversary of the end of
World War II, Touro Law Center will co-host a summer
2015 conference in China looking at the little-known
history of the Jewish people in Shanghai. For “Jews of
Shanghai,” a cross-cultural symposium, Touro Law
Center will partner with the Shanghai University of
International Business and Economics.
The history of Jews in Shanghai began in the mid-19th
century when Baghdadi Jews immigrated to
Shanghai, settled there, and prospered. Russian Jews
followed in the early 20th century as they fled the
Russian czar and the Bolshevik Revolution, and about
18,000 Jews from Europe moved to Shanghai in the
1930s and 1940s to escape Nazi Germany.

3.  The conference will look at the events
that led Jews to come to China and will
provide opportunities for Jewish and
Chinese students to interact and learn
from each other.
