The death of someone close has an enormous impact on the living. To lose one’s partner or a
dependent is an event we carry with us to our own graves. If the situation of financial stress is
also present during this time, the outcome can have devastating and lasting consequences.
The DHS (Department of Human Services) has accepted that in some cases – cases where
financial hardship is present the rules for early release of superannuation will now apply. Please
read the following:-
You may be able to get early release of super to pay for a partner, child or other dependant’s
funeral.
You must show that you can’t pay any other way, such as using savings or selling assets.
Read the rules about early release of super for a dependant.
We can let your super fund release enough money to cover reasonable costs. We use quotes and
invoices to work this out.
Funeral costs include the funeral service and the headstone. They don’t include an event like a
wake.
