November 1, 2015
Dear Friends,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon—the
world’s biggest and most popular marathon now marking its 45th year in our City.
Attracting thousands of runners from around the globe and millions of spectators each year, the
TCS New York City Marathon showcases the unparalleled excitement, ambition, and strength that
New York is known for. The 26.2-mile course takes athletes on an unforgettable journey through the
world’s most diverse city, right in the heart of the iconic neighborhoods, public spaces, and urban
landscapes that encompass all five of our dynamic boroughs. From its start at the Verrazano-Narrows
Bridge to its finish in Central Park, the race not only gives runners the chance to experience the
very best of our City, but also the opportunity to celebrate the incredible stories of personal
achievement, growth, and courage of participants and fans, which make it a success year after year.
So much more than just a sporting event, the TCS New York City Marathon continues to bring people
together in support of charities, and New York Road Runners has been a leader in empowering
runners of all skill levels and ages to take an active role in moving our global community forward.
Thanks to NYRR and its partners, this race has encouraged many to reach for the finish line and
dare to achieve goals they never thought possible, and I applaud all of its organizers, volunteers,
and participants, who inspire us with their commitment to raising the standards of teamwork,
integrity, and service in our City and beyond.
On behalf of the City of New York, I wish everyone the best of luck and a safe and wonderful
race that will be remembered for years to come.
Sincerely,
Bill de Blasio

Dear Friends,
Welcome to New York City. The 2015 TCS New York City Marathon marks the 45th running of this
race, a celebration of the strength and resiliency of tens of thousands of runners along with the
diversity of New York City’s five boroughs.
The TCS New York City Marathon will take runners from more than 100 countries through dozens
of neighborhoods—off the traditional visitor paths and through the hidden gems of Staten Island,
Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan. We encourage runners and spectators alike to be
inspired to explore those neighborhoods while they’re in town, experiencing the culture, cuisine,
and local color of New York City.
Make sure your first stop is at nycgo.com. New York City’s official digital guide puts our
attractions, events, and restaurants at your fingertips, helping you plan the trip of a lifetime.
Please accept my best wishes for a memorable New York City race.
Sincerely,
Fred Dixon
President CEO
This is New York City.

13. MEDIA GUIDE 11
Dear Media,
For any marathon runner, the TCS New York City Marathon is a special occasion. The support
and excitement of enthusiastic New Yorkers across all five boroughs as they line the streets to
cheer on all the runners makes this race experience very unique and memorable.
Now in the second year of our partnership, we continue to work closely with New York Road
Runners to make the TCS New York City Marathon the most technologically advanced and
socially engaged marathon experience for runners, fans, and families alike. In short, an
experience that will be a memory forever.
The 2015 TCS New York City Marathon Mobile App Powered by Tata Consultancy Services
provides even more exciting, race-specific features for runners, enthusiasts, and their support
community who want to keep track of the event. New this year is a pre-event personalized race
time predictor; an enhanced course map—complete with MTA route information—to track up to
10 runners and plan where to see or meet runners; an interactive TCS New York City Marathon
Health and Wellness Expo map; and a direct donation option for NYRR Mighty Milers.
Our unique year-round partnership with NYRR is creating a positive impact in communities from
the five boroughs to the tri-state area and beyond. We are taking the message of health and
wellness into these communities through programs that impact children. This year, we are
proud to support NYRR Mighty Milers, a youth running program for kids of all fitness levels
from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. It is designed to get kids active and healthy, while
building their self-esteem and confidence and teaching them to make and reach personal goals.
Here’s wishing you a great 2015 TCS New York City Marathon!
Warm regards,
N. Chandra

MEDIA GUIDE 25
This year’s TCS New York City Marathon week and race day will include new and exciting
features that make the 2015 event experience unique.
Kids Lead the Way
Kids will be a part of the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon in a big way. On Sunday
morning, before the 50,000 runners come through, hundreds of youngsters—members of
NYRR’s Mighty Milers and Young Runners programs—will run final miles of the course in
Central Park and finish at the TCS New York City Marathon finish line, as part of the NYRR
Youth Invitational at the TCS New York City Marathon. They’ll be featured as part of the live
broadcast on WABC-TV, Channel 7 and ESPN2.
“New York Road Runners is thrilled to put kids in the spotlight on Sunday,” says Peter Ciaccia,
president of events for NYRR and race director of the TCS New York City Marathon. “What
better way to represent our ‘Run for Life’ philosophy than by letting youth runners lace up and
directly experience the magic of this event?”
New Leadership at New York Road Runners
In May, New York Road Runners promoted Michael Capiraso and Peter Ciaccia to lead the
organization. Capiraso, who was chief operating officer, was named the president and CEO,
and Ciaccia, the former chief production officer and TCS New York City Marathon techni-
cal director, was named the president of events and race director of the TCS New York City
Marathon. Capiraso and Ciaccia took over the leadership of NYRR from Mary Wittenberg,
who moved on to launch Virgin Sport as the global CEO.
Capiraso, who has been with NYRR since 2010, is an industry veteran with extensive experience
in marketing, strategy, and operations. An avid runner himself, he participates in most of NYRR’s
races, from Brooklyn and Queens to the Bronx and Staten Island, and he’ll be running his 24th
consecutive New York City Marathon on November 1.
Now in his 14th year at NYRR, Ciaccia, a native of the Bronx, has led the development and
growth of NYRR’s events to include 50 races annually, ranging from the TCS New York City
Marathon to kids’ runs throughout the five boroughs to the NYRR Five-Borough Series, while
overseeing the production of NYRR’s broadcast properties.
Both Capiraso and Ciaccia will continue to elevate NYRR’s prominence and impact by
making running more accessible to a broader audience. More than 400,000 people of all
ages are engaged annually in NYRR activities, including 200,000 students through NYRR’s
free youth running programs, events, and resources.
Spike Lee to Serve as Grand Marshal
Spike Lee, the New York University tenured film professor, writer-director, actor, producer,
author, and iconic New York City figure, is serving as the Grand Marshal of the 2015 TCS
New York City Marathon. He’ll participate in race-week festivities including the TCS New
York City Marathon Opening Ceremony Presented by United Airlines, contribute to the
live race broadcast on WABC-TV, Channel 7 and ESPN2, and ride with Peter Ciaccia, the

TCS New York City Marathon Race Director, in the Grand Marshal vehicle through the
26.2-mile marathon route on race day, Sunday, November 1.
Lee, the first New Yorker and third person ever to serve as Grand Marshal, is one of New
York City’s most iconic personalities and renowned for his film career and passionate
support of all things New York, particularly the city’s sports scene.
The marathon’s first Grand Marshal was in 1979, when Czech running legend Emil Zatopek
was given the honor. In 2003, Grete Waitz of Norway became the marathon’s second Grand
Marshal. One of the most celebrated marathoners ever, Waitz won a record nine New York
City Marathon titles.
The TCS New York City Marathon Pavilion
The spectacular TCS New York City Marathon Pavilion will open Monday, October 26, just
steps from the finish line. This reimagined indoor space will welcome runners and their
fans from all over the world to Central Park to enjoy food and drinks at the Bar and Café,
operated by Tavern on the Green; shop for official apparel at the merchandise store; buy
tickets for race-week events; and experience classes, workshops, athlete and celebrity
appearances, film screenings, and live entertainment.
Other offerings will include the TCS New York City Marathon Run Hub, featuring group runs
led by local running clubs, interactive exhibits, giveaways, and photo opportunities. Tata
Consultancy Services will offer charging stations, free WiFi, and more. The TCS New York
City Marathon Pavilion will be open throughout race week.
An Exhibit You Don’t Want to Miss
Opening on October 20 at the Museum of the City of New York (located at 1220 Fifth Avenue on
the race course), The New York City Marathon: The Great Race is a juried exhibition highlighting
the runners, neighborhoods, and fans that make the TCS New York City Marathon the unique
five-borough celebration that it is. More information on the exhibit is available at mcny.org.
We’re Getting Our Tech On
Running may be one of the world’s oldest sports, but alongside NYRR’s partners at Tata
Consultancy Services, NYRR is using technology to make the TCS New York City Marathon
the most innovative race on the planet.
TCS New York City Marathon Mobile App:
Everything You Need in the Palm of Your Hand
Featuring an interactive expo map, live on-map tracking of up to 10 runners on race day,
a 2016 entry sweepstakes, and much more, the TCS New York City Marathon Mobile App
Powered by Tata Consultancy Services puts massive amounts of information right at users’
fingertips. Developed by Tata Consultancy Services, the app is available for download free
of charge throughout race week at the iTunes Store and Google Play Store.

TCS Runfographics: Get to Know the Race Like Never Before
Tata Consultancy Services has designed a series of fun and insightful data animations to
help marathoners and their fans get to know the race better. How many football fields are
in 26.2 miles? If all 50,000 runners stood shoulder-to-shoulder, how far would they stretch?
Through the NYRR website and social media, and on special kiosks at the TCS New York
City Marathon Health and Wellness Expo, TCS Runfographics will answer these and other
questions. TCS Runfographics will also unveil a pair of amazing 3D-animation films:
Marathon of Champions, which pits all of the race’s past winners against each other in a
data-driven virtual race, and Marathon Hot Spots, filled with fascinating insights about the race.
Marathon Journey Videos: Marathoners Share Their Stories with the World
The TCS New York City Marathon is so much more than a 26.2-mile race. It’s a global celebration
of running and community spirit, and for thousands of participants, it’s a culmination of months
of training and preparation. Every runner, volunteer, and spectator has a story to tell, and this
year, by using #TCSNYCMarathon in tweets, Instagrams, and Facebook posts, everyone involved
with the race can create a custom video highlighting their unique journey. Perfect for sharing on
social media, these videos are a chance to document memories that will last a lifetime.
NYRR Running Lab: Race Planning for the 21st Century
The TCS New York City Marathon Health and Wellness Expo will feature the NYRR
Running Lab, a hub for high-tech race-planning tools. In addition to picking up free pace
bands, runners can plan their strategy with an interactive course map and state-of-the-art
race predictor, which uses runner data to provide the most accurate and intelligent race
predictions available.

RACE
Start
The start of the TCS New York City Marathon has been called “the most spectacular start in
sport.” The comment comes from none other than Bill Rodgers, who won the marathon four
consecutive times (1976–79).
The marathon start remains one of the TCS New York City Marathon’s most unforgettable
moments for the 50,000 participants each year. Most marathoners arrive by bus and the
Staten Island Ferry from locations in Manhattan and New Jersey to the start’s staging area in
Staten Island’s Fort Wadsworth. There they have plenty of room to stretch out, relax, warm
up, have breakfast, and be entertained. Only registered entrants and guides are allowed in
Fort Wadsworth and the start area.
The staging area in Fort Wadsworth is organized as three color-coded villages—orange, blue,
and green. Breakfast, toilets, medical expertise, baggage check, photography, and entertain-
ment are available in all three villages, each of which leads to its own start on the bridge. The
first three wave starts will go off at 25-minute intervals, with 20 minutes between the Wave
3 and Wave 4 starts. The start of each wave will be signaled by the firing of a howitzer by
military personnel.
As thousands of runners from around the world begin their 26.2-mile journey through the
world’s most dynamic city, the strains of Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” fill the air as
helicopters fly overhead. It is truly a spectacular and awe-inspiring moment.
New this year, the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Athletic Complex in Staten Island will serve as
the staging area at the start for the professional and sub-elite athletes.

Course
When the New York City Marathon course moved to the streets of New York City in 1976, it
became a model for other metropolitan marathon courses around the world. As the route
winds through the diverse neighborhoods of New York’s five boroughs—Staten Island, Brooklyn,
Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan—it allows participants and spectators alike to appreciate the
city’s historical, cultural, and natural attractions.
Fort Wadsworth’s massive Civil War–era fortifications frame the starting line in Staten Island.
The 226-acre fort was a military base for 200 years and is now preserved as part of the Gateway
National Recreation area. Marathoners cross the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which has been the

longest single-span suspension bridge in North America since it opened in 1964. Its midpoint
is 274 feet above sea level, the highest elevation on the marathon route. (Please note that
spectators are not permitted at the start or on the bridge.)
MILE 1: The first mile is the longest and steepest hill on the course—but runners are too excited
and exhilarated to notice. The stunning views on all sides are a contributing factor.
MILE 2: Making up for mile 1, the second mile is all downhill, on the eastern half of the bridge.
MILES 2–4 (Brooklyn): The runners have a flat, straight shot down Fourth Avenue here, and they
pass through Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, which was the backdrop for the classic 1970s movie Saturday
Night Fever.
MILES 4–6 (Brooklyn): The course continues straight on Fourth Avenue. In Sunset Park, St.
Michael’s church and its distinctive egg-shaped campanile can be seen.
MILES 6–8 (Brooklyn): All that’s left of Ebbets Field, former home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, is
the left-field wall, still visible on Third Street. Runners are also close to the Barclays Center, home
to the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets and the NHL’s New York Islanders.
MILE 8 (Brooklyn): At mile 8, the race’s three starts finally converge as the runners pass the
Williamsburg Savings Bank Tower—the borough’s tallest building—and the Brooklyn Academy
of Music. Among the many great artists who have performed on its stage are Enrico Caruso,
Sarah Bernhardt, Martha Graham, Allen Ginsberg, and Philip Glass.
MILE 9 (Brooklyn): As the race passes through Fort Greene, runners get a musical lift from the
Bishop Loughlin High School Band at Clermont Avenue.
MILES 10–11 (Brooklyn): Sunday is a work day for the Satmar Hasidic Jewish community in
South Williamsburg; residents are unmistakable in their traditional black garb, and they often
hand orange slices to the runners.
MILES 11–12 (Brooklyn): Williamsburg is home to one of New York’s most vibrant artistic
communities—Bedford Avenue is lined with galleries, shops, and cafés.
MILES 12–13 (Brooklyn): Runners will see signs in Polish—but they’re still in Brooklyn. Greenpoint
has welcomed Polish immigrants for generations.
MILES 13–15 (Queens): Runners reach the halfway point on the Pulaski Bridge. Industrial Long
Island City is quiet every other Sunday of the year—during the week, it bustles with taxi depots,
bakeries, and the Silvercup movie studio, the country’s largest outside Hollywood.
MILE 16: There are no spectators permitted on the Queensboro Bridge. The runners experience
an almost eerie silence and spectacular views of Manhattan’s skyline.
MILES 17–18 (Manhattan): Runners are greeted by huge, cheering crowds on First Avenue—a big
change after the silence of the bridge. Fans appreciate the avenue’s many restaurants and bars.
There’s a Poland Spring Hydration Zone at mile 17 and a PowerGel Energy Zone at mile 18.
MILES 18-20 (Manhattan): “El Barrio” in East Harlem is home to a vibrant Latino community.
MILES 20–21 (Bronx): The Willis Avenue Bridge carries runners into the Bronx. Residents of
Mott Haven know that 20 miles is where runners often hit “the wall,” and they take pride in
encouraging tired marathoners.
MILES 21–23 (Manhattan): The Madison Avenue Bridge takes runners back over the Harlem
River into Manhattan. Harlem residents often come straight from church to cheer in their
Sunday best.
MILE 23 (Manhattan): World-famous museums dot this stretch of the course: El Museo del
Barrio, the Museum of the City of New York, the Jewish Museum, and the Guggenheim.

MILES 24–25 (Manhattan): Central Park at last! The park puts on a show for Marathon Sunday
with spectacular fall foliage. Runners pass between the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the world’s
largest art museum) and Cleopatra’s Needle, a 3,500-year-old Egyptian obelisk.
MILES 25–26 (Manhattan): Excitement is high as runners exit the park onto Central Park South
and approach Columbus Circle. This stretch is where Germán Silva of Mexico went the wrong
way in 1994 before turning around and outsprinting his training partner BenjamÍn Paredes for
the win.
MILE 26.2 (Manhattan): Runners return to Central Park for their homestretch run on West
Drive to the TCS New York City Marathon finish line!

CHARITIES
New York Road Runners is committed to helping nonprofits change the world for the better
through running and fitness, and the TCS New York City Marathon provides an opportunity
for runners to raise money for causes that they are passionate about. In 2015, charity entrants
in the TCS New York City marathon will run the race for one of more than 300 charities
participating in the official charity program.
Gold-Level Charities
NYRR’s Team for Kids
Team for Kids, the premier charity of the TCS New York City Marathon, is an international
community of adult runners who raise vital funds for NYRR Youth Services, whose mission
is to establish running-based programs that promote children’s physical fitness, character
development, and personal achievement. Now in its 14th year, Team for Kids has raised
more than $40 million since its inception, helping more than 200,000 children every year
enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Team for Kids members benefit from individualized
coaching, VIP race-day perks, super camaraderie, and the knowledge that they’re helping
kids fight childhood obesity—the greatest threat to our nation’s health. Raising funds for
programs that serve children in NYC and across the United States, Team for Kids members
truly add meaning to their miles.
Fred’s Team—Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Fred’s Team is Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s (MSK) athletic fundraising
program dedicated to bringing us all closer to a world without cancer.
This year, hundreds of runners will take on 26.2 miles in the team’s signature orange jersey
to raise awareness and fund critical cancer research.
Founded in 1995, Fred’s Team was named for New York City Marathon co-founder Fred
Lebow, who lost his battle with brain cancer in 1994. The program has raised over $61
million for MSK since its inception, and it also has official teams for the Boston Marathon
and the United Airlines NYC Half. Anyone can participate in any race worldwide and raise
money for MSK through Fred’s Team’s “Choose Your Own Event.” To learn more, visit
www.fredsteam.org or email fredsteam@mskcc.org.
NYRR Community Champions
Community Champions runners make a one-time $2,620 tax-deductible donation to
NYRR’s community enhancement initiatives including NYRR Striders, Mile Markers in NYC
Parks, and the NYRR Youth Running Series. As a benefit of the donation, runners receive
four Finish Line Grandstand tickets and access to VIP buses to the start.

Arciniaga is back for his third run at the TCS New York City Marathon. He had a breakthrough
race in New York in 2009, placing eighth in 2:13:46—a three-minute personal best at the time—
and returned last November to place 10th in 2:15:39. He has also recorded two top-10 finishes in
the Boston Marathon, coming in 10th in 2008 and seventh in 2014, along with a 14th-place finish
this past April. He earned his first national title in 2013, winning the USATF Marathon Champion-
ships with a strong finish. He ran the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon in New York City, where
he finished 17th, and improved to eighth in the 2012 Olympic Trials Marathon in Houston, TX.
Arciniaga, originally from Fountain Valley, CA, graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 2006 with
a degree in accounting. He planned to begin a career in accounting, but was invited to join a
Michigan-based post-collegiate training group. Arciniaga has based his training in Flagstaff, AZ,
since 2010, now training as a part of Team Run Flagstaff Pro. He married his Cal State Fullerton
teammate, Carolyn Ellis, in May of 2012.

2008 Beijing Olympic 5000m 7th 13:19.79
Barrios lowered his half-marathon personal best by 35 seconds earlier this year, running 1:00:46
for fifth place at the Kagawa Marugame International Half-Marathon on February 1. Six weeks
later, he was third at the United Airlines NYC Half, his highest placing to date after finishing fifth
in 2013 and fourth in 2014. This summer, he earned the bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at
the Pan American Games, and successfully defended his Pan American Games 5000-meter title
four days later.
Barrios’ personal-best times for 5000 meters indoors and outdoors were run in New York City—
he ran 13:09.81 outdoors at the New York Diamond League meet in 2011, and then set an indoor
national record of 13:23.61 at the NYRR Millrose Games in 2012. He also holds Mexican national
records for one mile, two miles, 25 kilometers, and 30 kilometers. Barrios, who bases his training
at altitude in Mexico City, represented his home country in the 5000-meter finals at the Beijing
and London Olympics, where he finished seventh and eighth, respectively. He is coached by
Tadeusz Kepka, an 83-year-old Polish national who has lived in Mexico, coaching Mexican
athletes, for more than 50 years.

2012 Paris Marathon 1st 2:05:11
Biwott is back in New York City after a fifth-place finish in 2013. In that race, he was the last
man to challenge eventual champion Geoffrey Mutai, sticking with his countryman’s surge
until just before mile 23. After fading late in New York, Biwott and his coach revised his
marathon training to include more long intervals. The new training plan paid off quickly, as
Biwott finished second in the Virgin Money London Marathon the following spring, setting
a personal best of 2:04:55. He returned to London this April and placed fourth.
Biwott set his half-marathon best of 58:56 at the 2013 Ras Al Khaimah Half-Marathon in the
United Arab Emirates. He ran a 59:20 half-marathon in Den Haag, Netherlands, on March 8
of this year, and that time stands as the second-fastest in the world to date in 2015. Biwott
worked on a dairy farm until 2006, when he started training full-time as a professional; now
a top-level marathoner, he still owns 10 cows.

A native of Kabarnet, Kenya, Chelimo was a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier and
earned many All-Big 12 honors while running for Texas Tech University. There, he met his wife,
Sally Kipyego, the 2012 Olympic 10,000-meter silver medalist, who set the women’s event
record at last year’s NYC Half and will make her marathon debut in New York City this year.
After graduation, Chelimo remained in College Station for a year as a volunteer assistant coach
for the Red Raiders, and then joined the Oregon Track Club Elite. In 2012, Chelimo set new
personal bests for the mile, 3000 meters, and 5000 meters, and he competed in the 10,000
meters at the Kenyan Olympic Trials. He made his half-marathon debut at the 2012 NYC Half,
where he finished sixth, and has returned each year since then, placing 13th in 2013, 20th in
2014, and seventh this past March.
