There are many types of cancer treatment.
The types of treatment will depend on the type of
cancer and how advanced it is.
Some people with cancer will have only one
treatment. But most people have a combination
of treatments, such as surgery with
chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Misconceptions about cancer treatment and
prognosis are often rooted in outdated theories.
They can cause undue stress and interfere with
effective treatment.

FACT: The reality is that cancer has been known for thousands of years
and recorded by ancient Egyptian and Greek physicians. One of the
biggest reasons why cancer is a lot more common these days is mainly
due to a combination of a longer lifespan and more information.

FACT:
Age is the biggest risk factor for cancer, and as technology has improved,
people’s life expectancy has gone up. As we age, the chance that our cells
may develop cancer increases due to DNA damage over time. In addition,
with more information about cancer and more techniques allowing for
early detection, more people are now aware of their condition. In past
centuries, it was normal for people to pass away due to ‘old age’ or
‘sickness’, with the real cause of death never found. Such cases may have
been the result of undiagnosed cancer.

While it is true that some aspects of modern life (eg. tobacco smoke,
processed foods, and an inactive lifestyle) may contribute to the
development of certain cancers, it is still inaccurate to claim that cancer

With early diagnosis and treatment, there are a
lot of patients who have outlived their cancers
(meaning dying from other causes – did not die
from their cancers).
There are a lot of patients who have lived for
more than 30 years with no recurrence.
How long an individual
cancer patient will live
and whether he or she
will die from the disease
depend on many factors,
including whether the
cancer is slow or fast
growing, how much the
cancer has spread in the
body, whether effective
treatments are available,
the person’s overall
health, and more.

Myth: There is no effective treatment for cancer.
Fact:
If a cancer is diagnosed and treated early enough, it greatly reduces the
risk of cancer spreading, prolongs survival, and in many cases causes all
signs and symptoms of the cancer to disappear. (EFFECTIVE TREATMENT)
If a cancer is diagnosed and treated late, the effectiveness of treatment is
less and NOT EFFECTIVE anymore.

Myth: There is no cure for cancer.
Fact:
It is true that physicians don’t talk or guarantee cure after a treatment of
cancer because of the potential for recurrence, in reality, cancer patients
can have cure after treatment.
Physicians use the word “remission” to mean there is no evidence of
recurrence at the time of the examination. This “remission” stage may
mean cure for the patient.
So, in reality, cancer patients can have a CURE after treatment, especially
those with slow-growing cancers and cancers treated in early stages.

Fact:
Cure versus remission
A cure means that the cancer has gone away with treatment, no more
treatment is needed, and the cancer is not expected to come back. It’s
rare that a doctor can be sure that cancer will never come back. In most
cases it takes time to know if the cancer might come back. But, the
longer a person is cancer free, the better the chance that the cancer will
not come back. More often, when treatment appears to be successful,
doctors will say the cancer is “in remission,” rather than “cured.”

Fact:
A realistic and practical definition of cure in cancer:
A patient with a particular cancer in remission or cancer free
for a period of time that is usually known to have least chance
of recurrence (for the type of cancer this patient has).
Example: know track record of least chance (say 1%) of
recurrence for Cancer A is 10 years. A patient with Cancer A
with a remission period of 10 years or more can be

MYTH: Cancer always comes back.
FACT:
NOT ALWAYS.
Though there is always a possibility that cancer can come back or recur, it
does not always come back.
The likelihood of recurrence depends on:
•The type of cancer
•How fast it grew initially
•How advanced it was when doctors first discovered it
General Principle:
Cancers diagnosed accurately
and treated adequately EARLY
have lesser chances of coming
back after treatment.

Myth: If we can put a man on the moon, we should have cured cancer by
now.
Truth: Finding the cure for cancer is proving to be more complex than
mastering the engineering and physics required for spaceflight.
Cancer actually includes a large group of diseases. Each person's cancer
may have many different causes. Despite advances in diagnosis and
treatment, doctors still have much to learn about what triggers a cell to
become cancerous and why some people who have cancer do better than
others.
In addition, cancer is a moving target. Cancer cells may continue to mutate and change
during the course of the disease. This may lead to the cancer cells no longer responding
to the chemotherapy drugs or radiation treatments that were given initially.

MYTH: It is easier to remain unaware you have cancer.
FACT: You should not ignore the symptoms or signs of cancer, such as a
breast lump or an abnormal-looking mole.
Although the thought of having cancer is frightening, talking with your
doctor and getting a diagnosis will give you the power to make informed
choices and seek the best possible care.
Because treatment is usually more effective during the early stages of
cancer, an early diagnosis often improves a person’s chance of survival.

FACT:
The truth is exactly the opposite. Ignoring a serious problem like
cancer will not make it go away.
But early detection of almost all cancers vastly increases the chances of a

MYTH: Superfoods prevent cancer.
FACT: Some foods like blueberries, beetroot, broccoli, garlic and green
tea are known as cancer-preventing superfoods. These foods are
certainly good for your health and are known to have positive effects in
the fight against cancer, eg. containing antioxidants or helping to remove
toxic elements in the body. However, it would be naive to look at any
particular food as a protection against cancer. Everybody is different and
cancer reacts differently in every person. There is no single food or food
group that can provide enough protection against cancer.

No.
Although some studies suggest that alternative or complementary
therapies, including some herbs, may help patients cope with the side
effects of cancer treatment, no herbal products have been shown to be
effective for treating cancer. In fact, some herbal products may be harmful
when taken during chemotherapy or radiation therapy because they may
interfere with how these treatments work. Cancer patients should talk
with their doctor about any complementary and alternative medicine
products—including vitamins and herbal supplements—they may be
using.

No.
Although research has shown that cancer cells
consume more sugar (glucose) than normal cells,
no studies have shown that eating sugar will
make your cancer worse or that, if you stop eating
sugar, your cancer will shrink or disappear.

Can cancer surgery or a tumor biopsy
cause cancer to spread in the body?

Myth: A needle biopsy can disturb cancer cells, causing them to travel to
other parts of the body.
Truth: For most types of cancer, there's no conclusive evidence that a
needle biopsy — a procedure used to diagnose many types of cancer —
causes cancer cells to spread.
There are exceptions, though, of which doctors and surgeons are aware. For instance, a
needle biopsy usually isn't used in diagnosing testicular cancer. Instead, if a doctor
suspects testicular cancer, the testicle is removed.
There is more benefit in doing biopsy than not doing it as a definitive diagnosis is
needed for a proper treatment.

Myth: Surgery causes cancer to spread.
Truth: The chance that surgery will cause cancer to spread to other parts
of the body is extremely low.
Don't delay or refuse treatment because of this myth. Surgically
removing cancer is often the first and most important treatment.
Some people may believe this myth because they feel worse during
recovery than they did before surgery.

Myth: Cancer is always painful.
Truth: Some cancers never cause pain.
For people who do experience cancer pain, especially people who have
advanced cancer, doctors have become more aware of the need to
control such pain and have learned better ways to manage it. Although
all pain may not be eliminated, the goal is to control the pain so that it
has little impact on your daily routine.

MYTH: Cancer treatment is usually worse than the disease.
FACT: Although cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation
therapy, can cause unpleasant and sometimes serious side effects, recent
advances have resulted in many drugs and radiation treatments that
have more manageable side effects.
Surgical treatment is also associated with side effects like pain and loss
of body tissues. However, the postoperative pain can be controlled by
analgesics and the loss of body tissues is in exchange for a better chance
for longer lifespan. (benefit-risk balancing)

Myth: A positive attitude is all you need to beat cancer.
Truth: There's no scientific proof that a positive attitude gives you an
advantage in cancer treatment or improves your chance of being cured.
What a positive attitude can do is improve the quality of your life during
cancer treatment and beyond. You may be more likely to stay active,
maintain ties to family and friends, and continue social activities. In turn,
this may enhance your feeling of well-being and help you find the
strength to deal with your cancer.

Myth: Regular checkups and today's medical technology can detect all
cancer early.
Truth: Although regular medical care can indeed increase the ability to
detect cancer early, it can't guarantee it. Cancer is a complicated disease,
and there's no sure way to always spot it.
Routine screening has been linked to a decrease in deaths from cancers
of the prostate, cervix, breast, lung, colon and rectum.

MYTH: If I’m not offered all of the tests, procedures, and treatments
available, I am not getting the best cancer care.
FACT: Not every test, treatment, or procedure is right for every person.
You and your doctor should discuss which ones will increase your chance
of recovery and help you maintain the best quality of life. You should also
discuss which ones could increase your risk of side effects and lead to
unnecessary costs.
If you decide after this discussion that you need more information before
making treatment decisions, it may be helpful to seek a second opinion.

receive depends on where your cancer is, whether or how much it has

trait of uncontrolled cell division that spreads into surrounding tissues.
Not only are there over 100 types of cancer, but each cancer reacts
differently in different people. Even in people with the same type of
tumour in the same body part, different types of genetic changes can
affect the cancer and should be treated differently.
