1. Where better solutions come out of storage
healthcare
solutions
Comport Consulting enables healthcare providers to reduce the complexity of their
clinical application environments, reduce server and storage hardware costs and
streamline their HIT workflow to deliver better patient care more efficiently.
Comport specializes in designing and delivering Healthcare Information Management solutions,
including:
• Grid based storage infrastructure with automated ILM policies to place data across
multiple tiers and locations: built-in disaster recovery, retention control and compliance,
• A vendor-neutral image archive; the hospital owns its patient data, not the
individual PACS application vendors,
• Clinical workflow integration of multiple HIS, RIS and MWL environments for
EMR and Healthcare Information Exchange (HIE) participation.
We build our solutions utilizing open, standards-based hardware and middleware from
healthcare IT technology leaders. We deliver on-time, on-budget solutions to hospital organizations, consolidation
imaging centers, diagnostic labs and large, physician-owned practices. Our Healthcare team
members are certified professionals in healthcare information management systems and members of continuity
the HIMSS national and local chapter organizations. We speak the Doctor’s language when it comes
to clinical information technology. compliance
Grid-based, storage infrastructure
Comport’s primary platform for medical archiving is the HP Medical Archive Solution: a tightly
integrated, Proliant server network (Grid) providing secure, fault tolerant, tiered storage for DICOM
images, HL/7 or XDS documents and other patient files. Built on Bycast StorageGrid™ software, the
HP MAS provides HIPAA compliant patient data storage over the lifetime of the data with automated
migration between technology generations. Because it operates across your standard LAN/WAN
network, the StorageGrid can automatically insure you have fast, reliable access to patient records
and images, wherever and whenever you need them. HP MAS will apply your organizations
protection and retention policies to every data object in the archive to insure it remains available in its
original form until it is purged from the archive at the compliance end date. A HIPAA compliant audit
trail is kept for all activities associated with the objects in the archive.
Vendor Neutral Archive for Patient Studies
Comport uses Acuo’s Vendor Neutral Archive middleware to provide healthcare clients
the ability to force the multiple Radiology and Cardiology PACS (and many other “ologies” built as
standalone solutions) to share common hardware infrastructure assets. Many of these stove-
piped applications can share a virtualized HP server environment, networked storage arrays
(SAN, NAS), HP MAS and universal workstations. This relieves complexity and lowers capital
expenditures and operational costs.
The VNA enabled by Acuo software, more importantly, morphs all the differently
formatted patient data into a common format, retaining any proprietary information that
PACS application vendors use for value add. The healthcare provider “owns” the data, not the
proprietary application vendors. When the applications request files from the VNA, they are
presented back to them in those particular proprietary formats that they require. Nothing is
lost: the Doctors continue to have the rich user interface of the clinical application.

2. Where better solutions come out of storage
healthcare
solutions
Acuo image management layer, delivered by Comport Consulting, extends the functionality
of HP Medical Archive and Bycast StorageGrid solutions. Acuo software is deployed as a
federation (or grid) of Proliant rack and/or BladeSystem servers connected over standard IP
networking infrastructure. It uses the StorageGrid API to provide extremely fast file retrieval
from the archive, either in a centralized topology or distributed across the footprint of the
entire healthcare enterprise; for example, Healthcare Information Exchanges.
Acuo provides interoperability with every major Radiology and Cardiology PACS, as well as
other modalities, and stores the data in a common format. And so, once a patient study is
ingested into the VNA, it never has to be migrated again. Since much of this patient data
has to be available for viewing over extended periods of time (a lifetime, perhaps), it allows
the Doctors to continue to take advantage of newer techniques and technology without
having the expense and complexity of migrating what could easily be tens or hundreds of consolidation
terabytes of proprietary formatted data.

Clinical Workflow Integration
compliance
The Acuo software also provides a DICOM Services Grid. Acuo servers are compliant
DICOM devices, providing a very extensive implementation of DICOM service classes.
This capability is used to integrate the healthcare IT workflow environments. Acuo DSG can
route requests for patient studies and Electronic Medical Records between multiple Hospital
Information Systems, Radiology and Cardiovascular Information Systems, multiple Modality
Worklist environments and workstations.
As an example: a Doctor, seeking information on a patient just brought into the Emergency
Department, could go to his workstation (or mobile device) and do a Google-like search for
any relevant reports or studies from all of the clinical applications in the enterprise…if they
are managed within the Acuo DSG. This increases the level of patient care that can be
provided and minimizes the time a Doctor needs to gather patient data.
Acuo’s archive can be deployed on almost any available storage solution and is installed on
sophisticated network fabric with intelligent load balancing and network virtualization
technology. Currently, Acuo DICOM Services Grids are deployed in single hospitals, multi-
site enterprises, cross-state Imaging Center Businesses, as well as international
deployments.
