Research is a systematic inquiry to describe, explain, predict and control the observed phenomenon. Research involves inductive and deductive methods (Babbie, 1998). Inductive methods analyze the observed phenomenon and identify the general principles, structures, or processes underlying the phenomenon observed; deductive methods verify the hypothesized principles through observations. The purposes are different: one is to develop explanations, and the other is to test the validity of the explanations.

Philosophy means the love of wisdom, originating from the Greek roots "philos" meaning love and "sophy" meaning wisdom. The first philosopher was Thales of Miletus in ancient Greece. Ancient Chinese societies widely used philosophies like Daoism during the Han dynasty, Confucianism during the Zhou dynasty, and Legalism during the Qin dynasty. Ancient Greece was also influential for philosophical thinking with great philosophers including Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle who challenged society to consider new perspectives. Philosophy remains important for understanding human nature and the world around us.
The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive function. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help protect against mental illness and improve symptoms.
Blue is considered the color of thought, concentration, communication, and time. It is seen as a calming color that gives a sense of ease and relaxation. Blue is commonly used in work environments, places of worship, and furniture because it provides a sense of space and focus. Blue is one of the most popular colors in fashion as it makes people feel confident yet casual in both traditional and modern styles. Psychologists and artists have also analyzed blue as a color that can represent sadness, loneliness, and lack of emotion.

The typical problem in product engineering is not bad strategy, so much as “no strategy”. This leads to confusion, lack of motivation, and incoherent action. The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.
HCL Notes and Domino License Cost Reduction in the World of DLAUpanagenda
Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/hcl-notes-and-domino-license-cost-reduction-in-the-world-of-dlau/
The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. And naturally we’ll explain the new licensing model.
Join HCL Ambassador Marc Thomas in this webinar with a special guest appearance from Franz Walder. It will give you the tools and know-how to stay on top of what is going on with Domino licensing. You will be able lower your cost through an optimized configuration and keep it low going forward.
These topics will be covered
- Reducing license cost by finding and fixing misconfigurations and superfluous accounts
- How do CCB and CCX licenses really work?
- Understanding the DLAU tool and how to best utilize it
- Tips for common problem areas, like team mailboxes, functional/test users, etc
- Practical examples and best practices to implement right away
How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?

Digital Banking in the Cloud: How Citizens Bank Unlocked Their MainframePrecisely
Inconsistent user experience and siloed data, high costs, and changing customer expectations – Citizens Bank was experiencing these challenges while it was attempting to deliver a superior digital banking experience for its clients. Its core banking applications run on the mainframe and Citizens was using legacy utilities to get the critical mainframe data to feed customer-facing channels, like call centers, web, and mobile. Ultimately, this led to higher operating costs (MIPS), delayed response times, and longer time to market.
Ever-changing customer expectations demand more modern digital experiences, and the bank needed to find a solution that could provide real-time data to its customer channels with low latency and operating costs. Join this session to learn how Citizens is leveraging Precisely to replicate mainframe data to its customer channels and deliver on their “modern digital bank” experiences.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

Google Desktop Search: Installation Tips and Advantages
1. Google Desktop Search: Installation Tips and Advantages
I often wonder if the Internet would be as useful as it is, if Google did not exist. They have now come
out with a new tool, Google Desktop Search. Read on to know more about the installation and
advantages of the same...
Google Desktop Search Tool
Desktop search is the name given to tools that search the contents of a user's own computer instead
of the Internet. These tools are designed in a manner such that they find information on all the
drives including the web browser history, email archives, images and videos.
Google Desktop Search was developed with the intention of bringing the Google search technology
to the desktop. By installing it on your PC, you have access to your own private Google server. It
goes on as a background process and indexes all documents, videos, music files, incoming and
outgoing email messages, instant messaging chats and just about everything else that is available on
your machine. The complete list of file types that the tool indexes is:
Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Word
Microsoft PowerPoint
Text Files
Emails
Chat
Web History
Images
Acrobat Files
2. Music and Video Files
After the initial indexing is completed when the Google Desktop is installed the first time, the tool
works real-time. The tool indexes the file system, email and chat applications, browser caches every
time you leave your PC idle for 30 seconds or more. It stops the second the mouse is moved or there
is an activity on the keyboard thus ensuring that it does not affect the normal work. After the initial
inventory is completed, the tool comes into action if an email is exchanged, a new document is
created or updated or you decide to chat with a friend. Everything will be indexed in a matter of a
few seconds.
Installing Google Desktop
The Google Desktop Search Engine can be freely downloaded from Google's website. Although the
application by itself it very small in size (just about 400 KB), the tool will take up about 500 MB of
space on the PC to store the indexing details. For optimum results, you should have a minimum of
128 MB RAM installed on your PC.
After installing the setup, the application will embed a colorful icon in your taskbar and will also
create a shortcut on your desktop. The installation is completed after you have set up a few
preferences in a pop-up. You will then be notified that the search engine is starting the initial
indexing.
Advantages of Google Desktop
The advantages offered by the Google search engine are far too many to count. However, listed
below are some of the advantages that make the tool a must have:
The tool is tightly integrated with the website. Hence, when you search for something on the
website, the result page will display results from your PC (if any) and the web.
The tool duplicates the history of your Internet Explorer. Hence, even if you delete the cache of your
browser, they are still available with the tool.
The indexing is performed when the computer is left idle. Hence, it does not slow down your work. If
you work very extensively on your PC, it is advisable to leave it idle for sometime so that it can catch
up with all the indexing.
Unlike, the Window Explorer Search wherein you have to specify the drive and folder path, the
Google tool can return the results instantaneously without specifying any drive or folder path.
When you want to search for a mail in your Outlook application, the Google search returns results
faster when compared to the search results of Outlook itself.
Text snippets are displayed on the result page. Hence, you get an idea about the result without
actually opening the document.
You can use it on GMAIL and can even read your old GMAIL mails when you are offline.
Disadvantages of Google Desktop
Unfortunately, there a few disadvantages as well. Though they do not outweigh the advantages in
3. any measure, you need to consider them before deciding if the tool serves your requirements.
Password protected files are indexed unless explicitly turned off.
Without any plug-ins and modifications, the tool does not index .tmp, .temp, .obj, .pst and .dat files.
The folders that are not indexed are the System Root Folder, Recycle Bin, Local App Data and
Templates.
Zip files cannot be indexed either. This is on my wish list and I hope that Google implements this in
the future.
Only 10 results at a time are displayed.
Keeping up with Google is like chasing a mirage...you move forward but you can not really get
there...it is a never-ending journey. Keep updating the Google Desktop Search Tool installed on your
machine with every release and maybe, just maybe, the mirage will appear a little closer.
