3. Overall Learning Objectives
โข To review the major eosinophilic pulmonary disorders
โข To be able to distinguish acute and chronic eosinophilic
pneumonia (AEP and CEP)
โข To be familiar with common presentations of AEP, CEP, Allergic
Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis (ABPA), Eosinophilic
Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (EGPA, Churg- Strauss
Syndrome), Hypereosinophilic Syndrome
4. Eosinophilic Lung Disease- Part 1

Part 1
Background and Classification
โข Objectives- To review the major eosinophilic pulmonary disorders
6. โข Cytokines that stimulate growth, differentiation, and
production of eosinophils: IL-5, IL-3, GM-CSF
โข Only IL-5 is specific for eosinophils
Granules contain:
-MBP (major basic protein)
-Eosinophilic cationic
protein
-Eosinophil derived
neurotoxin
-Charcot-Leyden crystal
protein
7. Definition
โข A heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by increased
numbers of eosinophils in 1 or more compartments of the lung and/or
blood
โข Radiographic abnormalities
โข Impaired pulmonary function
โข +/- peripheral eosinophilia
โข The role of the eosinophil in many of these diseases differs and is not
well characterized
โข Good guy vs bad guy vs bystander
8.
9. Classification- based on anatomical
location
โข Airway
โข Asthma
โข Eosinophilic bronchitis
โข Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis
โข Bronchocentric granulomatosis
โข Parenchyma
โข idiopathic (primary) vs known cause (secondary)
