When an injury or condition disrupts the nerve
roots in the neck region, a patient presents with
pain known as cervical radiculopathy. The pain
stems from the compression of a root of one of
the nerves that exit the spine above or below
the cervical vertebrae.

3.  These nerves are responsible for many of
the sensory functions in the skin as well as
the functional operation of muscles in
the upper extremities. Because of the
extensive reach of these nerves, a
cervical radiculopathy can create pain
along the arms and into the hands.

4.  Cervical radiculopathy can stem from
disease- or age-related degeneration of
the cervical vertebrae, as changes in this
area can reduce the space available for
the spine and nerves. Similarly, a
herniated disc in the cervical spine may
put pressure on the surrounding nerves.
This pressure can lead the patient to feel
numbness, pain, or weakness in the arms.
