5. Summery
North Country is a film that explains how workplaces have changed forever. It
is based on the Lois Jenson vs. Eveleth Taconite case, which was the first ever
class-action sexual harassment lawsuit. This film explained, through visuals,
what it was like to be a woman working in a “male-dominant” workplace. Josey
Aimes, who was played by the lovely Charlize Theron, is the main character of
this film. Her story is that she left her abusive husband, and moved back with
her parents. She had brought her kids, Sammy and Karen. Josey is not on good
terms with her father, Hank, because of how Josey got pregnant at a young age.
While she was adjusting and working at a hair salon, she reunites with her
friend Glory. Glory happened to work at the iron mine, and suggested the job
to her. It was the same iron mine that Hank, Josey’s father, worked at. Josey and
her kids end up moving in with Glory and her husband. Josey then starts
working at the iron mine and gets herself acquainted with the other women
workers. In this film, it shows how very few women workers there were
compared to male workers at that mine.
7. Sexual Harassment
“Sexual Harassment is a form of Sexual
Discrimination” (www.equalrights.org)
First Level of sexual harassment: “Gender
Harassment,” i.e. sexist comments (Helgeson, 2009)
“Unwelcome verbal, Visual, or Physical Conduct of a
sexual nature that is sever or pervasive and affects
working conditions or creates a hostile work
environment” (www.equalrights.org)
15. Internal Whistle Blowing
Josey got problem in the company with male workers
and too much harassment. company wasn't protecting
them, union wasn't protecting them. Then she went
for a talk with Mr. Pavich, the manager. He asked josey
for quitting her job instead of helping her. it was very
sad moment for her. But she didn't gave up. She decide
to talk with Mr. Pearson the owner of that company for
better improvement of this matter. But unfortunately
she got the same answer from Mr. Pearson too
17. External Whistle Blowing
Josey shared this matter with the lawyer Bill. First time
bill was not interested with this case. But after he
agreed to take this case, because this type of case was
not had done yet before
18. Justice
First of all the perception of the thinking of defaulters
were wrong so that they must be punished.
Secondly government should take severe actions for
this type of crime so that the girls can move united.
When the good people afraid to support her the court
scenes work magnificently on that level.
The company should change the rules so that they can
assign both male and female equally as their
employers.
Her lawyer Bill White also helped her for justice.
24. Conclusion
When I watch this movie I became emotional and this
is a heart touching movie . We learn from this movie
about women empowerment . I can realize the
situation of women in the work place where men
power is more than women. We can also learn from
