1. In response to the work of David Oliveira I created 2D wire sculptures depicting the face of Jesus. I
used wire as the artists I was loking at had very traditional ways of working, e.g. using acrylics on
canvas and I wanted to respond to their work in a modern wayby using a different material.
I chose to create two wire scultpures both differeing in scale. To create the wire scultpures I took
thin, manageable wire and alternated between using my fingers and pliars to manipulate it into the
shapes I wanted. The first piece I completed was quite small. I wrapped the wire around itself a lot
so that it looked thick and messy, I did this because David Oliviera’s work looks like sketches and I
wanted my own work to have that style.
Here I tried to
show the
crown of
thorns placed
on Jesus head
at the time of
his Crucifixion,
from the
picture below.
This is the image I was working from; it is an image of
Jesus from the time of his crucifixion. I chose to use
Jesus as a subject as this relates to the artists I was
looking at before (i.e. Da Vinci, Caravaggio,
Michelangelo)whose art includesreligious symbolism
and Jesus symbolises new life and salvation in
Christianity. I specifically chose to use a picture of him
As this was the first piece I made I started quite small to get used
with meterail such as thorns on him as it is very
to using athe crown of wire. I am glad I chose to experiment
meaningful to Christianity as it represents the pain it
and explore wire I but I think that this piece isn’t as good ashe
went because during the also don’t crucifixion.
could be through it is so small timeI of his think I portrayed any
emotion in the piece as the face is very unclear so in my next
piece I’d like to portray some emotion.
2. David Oliveira’s sculptures look like
drawings and I was trying to
incorporate his style into my own
work, however, I don’t feel that was
properly portrayed in the first wire
piece I completed. When starting
the second piece I decided to not
use as much wire and make the
piece look more like a linear sketch.
I think this piece looks more like a
drawing then the previous piece
because I didn’t use so many pieces
of wire for the lines. This piece
incorporates the research I have
done on David Oliveira and I think it
is a good response to the paintings
of Jesus I explored earlier on.
I tried to portray Jesus emotion’s better in this piece and I think that came across more than it did in
the first wire piece I did.
I tried to portray a sorrowful expression in the eyes by
having the eyebrows point upwards. I wanted this
expression as in a lot of paintings of Jesus he has this
kind of ‘sad’ look; this look is supposed to represent
his emotions at being sentenced to crucifixion. This is
portrayed in a lot of paintings for example Ecce Homo
by Antonello da Messina.
