8. Goal #1
Smart Goal 1 : Reading Comprehension
All students, by June 2014, will improve in reading comprehension
through increased proficiency in vocabulary with emphasis on
academic/abstract language as measured through system-wide and
school based assessments.
Instructional Intervention: Building Academic Vocabulary (6-Step
Process)
Smart Goal 2 : Problem Solving and Reasoning
All students, by June 2014, will improve in problem solving and
reasoning through improved proficiency in identifying problems,
choosing strategies, applying strategies, and reflecting on results as
measured by system-wide and school based assessments.

13. The average tour of duty is 2 years in
Bahrain. Normally we would assume
that 1/2 of our student population will
be in their first year at our school at any
given time. However, recent civil unrest
and a mandatory evacuation in 2004
has made predicting our population
movement a challenge. We do anticipate
an influx of military students as more
families are permitted to return.

15. There had been a steady increase in our student population after the evacuation
of Americans in 2004. The closure of the school in the spring of 2011 caused
another precipitous drop in our student population, though it was not as severe
or as long lasting.

Overall, students’ OPIs in Science were higher than students’ OPIs in Math and Reading, with the exception of the
OPIs obtained by students in 10th grades.
The relatively lower scores in Science Inquiry in grades 6, 7, and 9, support the necessity of Goal #2: Problem
Solving.

Vocabulary: Reading and Writing Strategies include Vocabulary Strategies. It
should be noted that Vocabulary Strategies have the highest number of test
items in Reading and Writing Strategies. In 2010, Reading/Writing Strategies
had the lowest (or one of the lowest) percentages of students who achieved High
Mastery in Grades 6, 8, and 9. Another area that showed a relatively low
performance, although to a lesser degree, was Analyze Text

challenges. We have implemented more assistance for
students.

We have seen improvement in Reading Comprehension in grades
6, 8, & 9, but the large influx of students in grades 10 and 11
present challenges and have led us to more powerful interventions.
Grade 7 showed a slight decrease in Reading. We adopted more
powerful intervention strategies: Marzano’s 6 Step process for
