2. Standard 3rd Grade
• LANGUAGE (L)
• Conventions of Standard English
• ELACC3L
• 1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English
grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
• a. Explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and
adverbs in general and their functions in particular sentences.
3. Silent Lesson
• I will explain to the students that we are about to have a “silent
lesson” Their means of communication will be solely thumbs up and
thumbs down.
• We will have a brief sample lesson of where they give me a “thumbs
up when they agree with me and a “thumbs down” when they do
not.
• Students will be assigned a random number that will correlate to
sentences on the Smartboard.
• When their number is called the students will approach the
Smartboard and make any necessary corrections with the Smartpens
to their sentence as well as adding adjectives.
4. The Judges
• The students who are waiting for their turn to make the corrections to their
sentences will be acting as “judges” to the student who is making the corrections.
• The student making the corrections will use the pens to correct errors and insert
adjectives when they are needed. Once they feel that they have finished making
corrections they will look to the class for either “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”
to ensure that they have completly corrected their sentence. (These sentences
will have errors of punctuation, capitalization, spelling and will require the
student to insert grade level appropriate adjectives. If a student receives a
“thumbs down” they will know that they have not finished making corrections
and they need to review the sentence again.
• Because the other students are the judges, they have to be paying attention to
the student at the board and make their ruling when the time comes.
5. Objectives
This lesson carries multiple objectives
• Teach the children how to communicate silently
• Allow each student a chance to interact with the technology that is in
the room, not just the teacher being in control of the Smartboard
• Allows the students to practice their skills at spelling, punctuation,
capitalization while allowing them to choose their own adjective,
while they are in command of the Smartboard
• Teaches the students to think about adjectives and how they are
used to make boring sentences more meaningful and interesting
• Students will see that technology, such as a Smartboard, can be used
in both fun an educational ways
6. Tell me how BORING!!
As a recap I would have a short passage displayed on the Smartboard for
them to read that has no adjectives in it and they are to guess an object
that I am describing, after everyone has given me their guess about the
object I will slowly begin adding adjectives to the passage until they are
finally able guess the object.
My goal is for them to see how adjectives give greater meaning to words
and how they can use them to describe their world.
