You have a nanny that is great with your kids. You trust them with your home and children. But do you
know if you are giving enough to them to ensure they are the best they can be for you and them? Let's
By Patrick Peltier face it, child raising is a lot of work and takes serious energy, especially if you want it done well. Here's a
April 11, 2013 few pointers to help make the most of your nanny's time and ensure they remain in good health for the
long-term.
1. Respect their own time There is no such thing as a 24/7 nanny. Just like you, they will need their own down-time to
recharge, rest and enjoy their own interests and hobbies. This is critical if you want your home to continue to run
smoothly.
2. Respect their Rights You rely on your nanny or caregiver to be dependable and sometimes we can become too
demanding in what we expect. We are only human, but it is important to remember, In Canada, we have a CANADIAN
CHARTER OF RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS and we need to respect it. Usual common sense will keep us in line, but it's
important to be aware.
3. First Aid and CPR Way too often, Parents and Nannies both have to deal with choking babies, drowning, electrical
shocks and burns, to name a few household child emergencies. Pay to have your nanny professionally trained, and
while your at it, it might be a good idea for you to attend as well. You children's lives are important and you cannot be
too prepared.
4. Communicate! I cannot relate this enough. As long as both you and your nanny have constant and clear
communication, there will be less chance of misunderstandings, confusion or mistakes. The emotional well being of you,
your family and your nanny will be well if you keep open communication as a high priority.
5. Child Raising Guidelines This really falls into the above tip on communication, but I felt it was worth adding. There are
many opinions on how to raise, guide and discipline children. Make sure you and your nanny are on the same page, or
you will find a conflict that is challenging to work out after the fact. Again, clear communication will enable this to run
smoothly as well.
