First Point
The Day of Gloom and Anguish
1a But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
From 738-734 B.C. Tiglath-Pileser III waged war against his long-time enemies, the Syrians.
The Northern Kingdom of Israel allied itself with the Syrians and became a target of the Assyrians.
The northern tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali were amongst the first to fall.
2 Kings 15:29
29 In the time of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria came and took Ijon, Abel Beth Maacah, Janoah, Kedesh and Hazor. He took Gilead and Galilee, including all the land of Naphtali, and deported the people to Assyria.
The Assyrians invented the army boot.
This is a bigger deal than we might realize. Most armies of this time fought in sandals. The Assyrians wore knee high leather boots. They were thick-soled boots and had inserted iron plates to protect the shins. Their boots enabled them to fight on any terrain, whether rough or wet during any season. This made the Assyrians the first year-round army.
They also invented the compound bow.
In addition, they invented the first “tanks” in the form of mobile missile platforms attached to iron chariots drawn by teams of four horses.
The Assyrians were cruel and brutally efficient.
