February 1973 The Constitution of the Menai Bridge
and District Civic Society. A4 document
1975-76 Menai Bridge Civic Society and the Bridge Celebration
Committee working hard on the 150thAnniversary of the opening of the
Suspension Bridge
1976 Jan 24th-31st week long celebrations for the 150th Anniversary. Civic Soc idea
to floodlight the bridge. Finance to do it came from the Welsh Office. Councillor
Thomas O Jones Chairman of Gwynedd Highways Committee switched on the flood
lights on the bridge. at 6pm on Friday 23rd Jan. and the Telford Exhibition at the
Tegfryn Gallery was opened on Jan 24th by Prof. Sir Norman Rowntree, President of
the Institution of Civil Engineers. entry 10p adults, seniors & children 5p. Mr. Robert
Brown, (Museum of Childhood) selling a Souvenir Programme. Grand dinner
organised,fancy dress ball, play performance in Theatr Gwynedd, commemorative
plates ordered.

After the 150th Anniversary aThomasTelfordTrust was
set up.
This to be a charitable trust to perpetuate the memory ofThomasTelford, engineer
and architect and creator of the Menai suspension bridge across the strait. Objectives
a) the advancement of education in civil engineering and architecture b) to promote
knowledge of the public in ecology of the area. Trustees, 2 persons from MB& District
Civic Society, 2 fromTown Council, 2 from Isle of Ang. County Council, 2 from
governing body of David Hughes School. from Civic Soc,were I ap Thomas and David
Senogles and Trevor Morgan. fromTown Council John Meirion Davies,Ann Roberts and
H.Glyn Jones.
Town Council later agreed to set up aTelford Room, but Cllr.Alwyn Owens 'could not
see much value in such a project'.

Dec. 1976 Start of Telford Prize, to David Hughes School. awarded annually to the
most promising GCE A Level pupil who is intending to pursue a higher level course
in Engineering, Physics or Maths at Univ. or Polytechnic.
1976 A Miss Wendy J.M. Puller of 84, Cleveland Rd. Ealing, wrote to say her
gt.grandfather was involved in building the bridge and she wishes to bequeath an
oil painting of him. His name........ Cooper, it is 4'x4' in a gold frame. His grandson
was killed in WWI, her brother killed in WW2, she has no descendents to leave it
to.
March 1977 Thomas Telford Trust looking at Princes Pier, wanted to get the
tenancy on the Pier Master's House in order to establish a permanent exhibition.

Mrs.Ann Roberts deputy Mayor MBTC, John Meirion Davies MBTC, and Mr. I. ap
Thomas Architect and Chairman MBCivic Soc.

1981 An executive committee called to the home of sec.
Trevor Morgan to consider a request forTTTrust
monies to help set up a Marine and History Museum at
the old John Edwards warehouse.
Mike Gash prepares an A4 document with detailed drawings of how the building would
be used, with aquarium, lecture theatre,exhibits etc. Letter from Dr.Tom Pritchard of
NCC saying the TelfordTrust has just over £300 in cash, and therefore unable to
establish a Telford Museum with this sort of opening capital.

d) Re-enactment of Last Ferry & First Bridge Crossing.
e) Cavalcade ‘Transport through the Ages.’
M.B. Civic Society were instrumental in arranging for the
bridge to be floodlit. (Letter March 1975)
