In 1928, Harry Lichten
founded the Industrial
Paint & Varnish Company
to make and market
paints, varnishes and
caulking compounds.
8. Black Swan History:
During World War II, the
federal government asked
Lichten to develop a putty
for a military use.
The product became a
huge seller for the
company during the war.
9. Black Swan History:
After WWII, putty sales abruptly halted.
Harry discovered a use for the putty in
the plumbing trade. It made a better
seal with less mess than existing
methods of setting toilet bowls.
11. Black Swan History:
Upon entering the plumbing trade, Harry
changed the company name
to Black Swan Mfg. Co.
Black Swans are very rare.
He liked that image for the company.
12. Black Swan History:
In the 1950s Howard Lichten, the second
generation, took leadership of the company.
In 2012, the fourth generation, Francine Lichten,
joined the company.
In the 1970s Jeffrey Lichtenbecame the third
Generation to run the company.
