Established in 1973 by Sumit Ghosh and
Suchitra Ghosh, the firm, over the last four
decades, has earned a reputation for a critical
practice that focuses on finding solutions which
establish common ground between economic,
sociological and environmental concerns.
Projects from the firm consistently seek to derive
their creative response from the nature of the
problem defined through incisive inquiry into
normative processes.
S. Ghosh Architects has been the recipient of several awards and winners in national and
international competitions since its inception. In the recent past it has received prestigious
commissions scoring above acclaimed international firms in design competitions. These
include Airport Terminals, Group Housing projects, institutions etc. The firm also has a wide
international exposure through its principals whose formative years have been spent at the
offices of masters of the field as well as through collaborative productions on large scale
projects with architectural firms having offices in several countries. Despite such experience
and exposure, the practice is acutely aware of the positive and negative aspects of designing
within a world characterised by globalisation.
With Sudipto Ghosh joining as a third principal of the firm in 2003 after working in New York
for several years, one might be able to discern a dialogue of two generations apparent in the
designs: one that still strongly values the ties to tradition and the other that is eager to explore
the universality of human habitation through time and space. There is also evidence of new
exploration of material technologies made possible by the liberalisation of India in 1992 in the
projects.
The firm has a staff strength of about 25 and the principals believe that this figure is optimal in
ensuring quality without losing personal attention to the needs of the project. All works are
handled on 3-dimensional parametric software that respond to quick design modifications and
generate representations for a more intense client-architect-contractor interaction. The office
uses universally recognised CAD standards and abides by international norms of sustainable
building technologies and building for the differently-abled.
