What is Global Warming ?
• Global Warming is a gradual increase in the overall
temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed
to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of
carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants.
Average increase in Temperature
Average increase in Sea Level
Animals that will extinct due to global
warming
1. Polar bears
2. Penguin
1. Polar Bears
• The chief threat to the polar bear is the loss of its sea ice habitat
due to global warming.
• It is on the Arctic ice that the polar bear makes its living, which is
why global warming is such a serious threat to its well-being.
• How are polar bears being impacted by global warming?
• Population sizes decreasing
• Sea ice platforms moving farther apart and swimming conditions
more dangerous
• Fewer hunting opportunities and increased scarcity of food
2. Penguins
• These Antarctic birds mostly live on tiny
crustaceans called krill. Krill live on the
undersides of ice sheets, where they find
refuge and algae as food. But as Antarctic sea
ice retreats, krill populations are falling—
meaning that the penguins have to migrate
farther to find food. Spending a lot more
energy to find food makes penguins less
successful at breeding and raising young, the
scientists said.
Animals that already extinct
1. Golden Toad (1989)
2. Madeiran Large White (2007)
3. Dutch Alcon Blue Butterfly (1979)
4. Tecopa Pupfish (1982)
Golden Toad
• The golden toad is not the only species to
disappear in the past 40 years, but it might
just be the brightest. This fluorescent
amphibian was found in the high-altitude
ridges of Costa Rica, but thanks to pollution,
global warming and fungal skin infections, the
species became extinct in 1989.
Madeiran Large White
• The stunning Madeiran Large White butterfly
was found in the valleys of the Laurisilva
forests on Portugal’s Madeira Islands. The
butterfly's closest relative, the Large White, is
common across Europe, Africa and Asia.
• Cause of extinction: Loss of habitat due to
construction as well as pollution from
agricultural fertilizers are two major causes of
the species' decline.
Dutch Alcon Blue Butterfly
• This Dutch butterfly — a subspecies of the Alcon Blue
— was found mainly in the grasslands of The
Netherlands. While closely related species (pictured
here) still exist in parts of Europe and Asia, the last
Dutch Alcon Blue was seen in the wild in 1979.
• Cause of extinction: Increases in farming and building
had a negative impact on the Alcon Blue's habitat and
caused it to lose its main food source.
Tecopa Pupfish
• The Tecopa pupfish, a native of the hot springs
of the Mojave Desert, has the distinction of
being the first animal declared extinct under
the provisions of the Endangered Species Act
of 1973. The pupfish's decline was
precipitated when its natural habitat was
encroached upon by developers.
• Cause of extinction: Destruction of natural
habitat.
If the sea level rises what will happen
the cities
Cities at risk
• Getting ready for sea-level rise is every city’s problem. Without action, in
fact, rising seas will sooner or later alter most of civilization’s urban
footprint. Coastal floodplains worldwide are crowded with cities often
built no more than 3 feet above sea level. More than 2 billion people—an
estimated 37 percent of the world’s population—live within 60 miles of
the coast and would be affected, directly or indirectly, by incursions of the
sea.
• In sheer economic terms, the stakes of sea-level rise in urban areas are
particularly high. An added 0.5 meters (20 inches) of ocean water by the
year 2050 would put $28 trillion in assets at risk in the world’s 136 port
megacities, according to a 2009 report of scientists and insurance experts
assembled by World Wide Fund/Allianz, a global investment and insurance
company. On the Northeastern coast of the United States, the expected
maximum rise in sea level of 26 inches by 2050 would threaten in five
cities alone—Baltimore, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Providence—
assets worth about $7.4 trillion. In Boston, losses could reach $460 billion,
or the equivalent of 20 Big Digs.
Here are some cities that might sink in
the coming years
1. New York City, New York
If you've never seen the Statue of Liberty or been dazzled by the lights of
Times Square, now's the time. Much like its Thai comrade, America’s most
densely populated city is doomed to suffer the effects of global warming.
Sitting at the mouth of the Hudson River where it flows into the Atlantic
Ocean, this concrete jungle will soon be at a much higher risk of damage
from rising sea levels and imposing tropical storms. And unlike the ones
bobbing around in a barrel on Halloween, this Big Apple will not float.
2. Bangkok, Thailand
• Thailand’s capital is sinking — and sinking fast. However,
unlike other cities on our list, a shoddy foundation isn’t
necessarily to blame. Resting on the Chao Phraya River —
which flows into the Bay of Bangkok about 30 miles south of
the city center — this colossal settlement is more likely to
drown than sink. Experts now say that this mouthwatering
foodie destination — along with the dozens of beautiful
temples found here — may be under water in as little as
seven years.
Bangkok is likely to sink
completely by the year
2100, much like a
modern day 'Atlantis'
3. Shanghai, China
• Things aren't looking good for Shanghai, either. Located on China's coast,
this sprawling city was built on swamplands surrounding the mouth of the
Yangze River. Originally a small fishing village, Shanghai began to draw
more and more residents in the mid-19th century. Modest homes were
replaced by breathtaking skyscrapers (not to mention some of the best
shopping venues in Asia), and Shanghai soon became the most densely
populated city in the world, housing over 20 million people by 2001. The
city was handling rapid expansion just fine until the early 20th century,
when wells became a major source of water and the underlying sediment
deposit was disturbed. According to PBS, Shanghai sank roughly eight feet
between 1921 and 1965, which equals about two inches per year. The city
still continues to drop at a rate of about half an inch per year.
In this photo Shanghai has apparently sunk
more than 2 metres in the last 15 years and
continues to sink at a rate of about 1.5
centimetres per year.
How much total species of animals
extinct from the world due to global
warming and how many are in
endanger of extinction due to global
warming…..?
Here are some of the extinct animals
and the endangered animals
• BIRDS
• A 2009 report on the state of birds in the United States found that 251 (31
percent) of the 800 species in the country are of conservation concern.
Globally, Birdlife International estimates that 12 percent of known 9,865
bird species are now considered threatened, with 192 species, or 2
percent, facing an “extremely high risk” of extinction in the wild — two
more species than in 2008. Habitat loss and degradation have caused most
of the bird declines, but the impacts of invasive species and capture by
collectors play a big role, too.
Reptiles
Globally, 21 percent of the total
evaluated reptiles in the world are
deemed endangered or vulnerable
to extinction by the IUCN — 594
species — while in the United States,
32 reptile species are at risk, about 9
percent of the total. Island reptile
species have been dealt the hardest
blow, with at least 28 island reptiles
having died out since 1600. But
scientists say that island-style
extinctions are creeping onto the
mainland's because human activities
fragment continental habitats,
creating “virtual islands” as they
isolate species from one another,
preventing interbreeding and
hindering populations’ health. The
main threats to reptiles are habitat
destruction and the invasion of
nonnative species, which prey on
reptiles and compete with them for
habitat and food.
FISH
• The American Fisheries Society identified 700 species of
freshwater or anadromous fish in North America as being
imperiled, amounting to 39 percent of all such fish on the
continent . In North American marine waters, at least 82 fish
species are imperiled. Across the globe, 1,851 species of fish
— 21 percent of all fish species evaluated — were deemed at
risk of extinction by the IUCN in 2010, including more than a
third of sharks and rays.
Reduce our consumption of
fossil fuels
Because greenhouse gas emissions are tied very closely to our energy
consumption, using less fossil fuel based energy puts fewer greenhouse gases
into the atmosphere.
This will help slow global warming.
Mountaintop removal for
coal mining near Rawl,
West Virginia.
50% of electricity in the
United States is produced
from coal.
Blowing Up Your World
• 1. How many of you leave your
bedroom light on when you are not
in the room?
• Turning off lights saves energy and
money. The more energy used, the more
rivers are dammed or more fossil fuel is
burned, causing air pollution and
increased levels of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere.
Blowing Up Your World
• How many of you walked, bicycled or took
public transportation to get to school
today, instead of coming by private
automobile?
Our reliance on cars that burn fossil fuels is one of
the major causes of increased levels of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere and it is the primary
cause of urban smog.

what is Global warming and how can we stop it

  • 1.
  • 2. What is Global Warming ? • Global Warming is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants.
  • 3. Average increase in Temperature
  • 5. Animals that will extinct due to global warming 1. Polar bears 2. Penguin
  • 6. 1. Polar Bears • The chief threat to the polar bear is the loss of its sea ice habitat due to global warming. • It is on the Arctic ice that the polar bear makes its living, which is why global warming is such a serious threat to its well-being. • How are polar bears being impacted by global warming? • Population sizes decreasing • Sea ice platforms moving farther apart and swimming conditions more dangerous • Fewer hunting opportunities and increased scarcity of food
  • 7. 2. Penguins • These Antarctic birds mostly live on tiny crustaceans called krill. Krill live on the undersides of ice sheets, where they find refuge and algae as food. But as Antarctic sea ice retreats, krill populations are falling— meaning that the penguins have to migrate farther to find food. Spending a lot more energy to find food makes penguins less successful at breeding and raising young, the scientists said.
  • 8. Animals that already extinct 1. Golden Toad (1989) 2. Madeiran Large White (2007) 3. Dutch Alcon Blue Butterfly (1979) 4. Tecopa Pupfish (1982)
  • 9. Golden Toad • The golden toad is not the only species to disappear in the past 40 years, but it might just be the brightest. This fluorescent amphibian was found in the high-altitude ridges of Costa Rica, but thanks to pollution, global warming and fungal skin infections, the species became extinct in 1989.
  • 10. Madeiran Large White • The stunning Madeiran Large White butterfly was found in the valleys of the Laurisilva forests on Portugal’s Madeira Islands. The butterfly's closest relative, the Large White, is common across Europe, Africa and Asia. • Cause of extinction: Loss of habitat due to construction as well as pollution from agricultural fertilizers are two major causes of the species' decline.
  • 11. Dutch Alcon Blue Butterfly • This Dutch butterfly — a subspecies of the Alcon Blue — was found mainly in the grasslands of The Netherlands. While closely related species (pictured here) still exist in parts of Europe and Asia, the last Dutch Alcon Blue was seen in the wild in 1979. • Cause of extinction: Increases in farming and building had a negative impact on the Alcon Blue's habitat and caused it to lose its main food source.
  • 12. Tecopa Pupfish • The Tecopa pupfish, a native of the hot springs of the Mojave Desert, has the distinction of being the first animal declared extinct under the provisions of the Endangered Species Act of 1973. The pupfish's decline was precipitated when its natural habitat was encroached upon by developers. • Cause of extinction: Destruction of natural habitat.
  • 13. If the sea level rises what will happen the cities
  • 14. Cities at risk • Getting ready for sea-level rise is every city’s problem. Without action, in fact, rising seas will sooner or later alter most of civilization’s urban footprint. Coastal floodplains worldwide are crowded with cities often built no more than 3 feet above sea level. More than 2 billion people—an estimated 37 percent of the world’s population—live within 60 miles of the coast and would be affected, directly or indirectly, by incursions of the sea. • In sheer economic terms, the stakes of sea-level rise in urban areas are particularly high. An added 0.5 meters (20 inches) of ocean water by the year 2050 would put $28 trillion in assets at risk in the world’s 136 port megacities, according to a 2009 report of scientists and insurance experts assembled by World Wide Fund/Allianz, a global investment and insurance company. On the Northeastern coast of the United States, the expected maximum rise in sea level of 26 inches by 2050 would threaten in five cities alone—Baltimore, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Providence— assets worth about $7.4 trillion. In Boston, losses could reach $460 billion, or the equivalent of 20 Big Digs.
  • 15. Here are some cities that might sink in the coming years 1. New York City, New York If you've never seen the Statue of Liberty or been dazzled by the lights of Times Square, now's the time. Much like its Thai comrade, America’s most densely populated city is doomed to suffer the effects of global warming. Sitting at the mouth of the Hudson River where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean, this concrete jungle will soon be at a much higher risk of damage from rising sea levels and imposing tropical storms. And unlike the ones bobbing around in a barrel on Halloween, this Big Apple will not float.
  • 16. 2. Bangkok, Thailand • Thailand’s capital is sinking — and sinking fast. However, unlike other cities on our list, a shoddy foundation isn’t necessarily to blame. Resting on the Chao Phraya River — which flows into the Bay of Bangkok about 30 miles south of the city center — this colossal settlement is more likely to drown than sink. Experts now say that this mouthwatering foodie destination — along with the dozens of beautiful temples found here — may be under water in as little as seven years. Bangkok is likely to sink completely by the year 2100, much like a modern day 'Atlantis'
  • 17. 3. Shanghai, China • Things aren't looking good for Shanghai, either. Located on China's coast, this sprawling city was built on swamplands surrounding the mouth of the Yangze River. Originally a small fishing village, Shanghai began to draw more and more residents in the mid-19th century. Modest homes were replaced by breathtaking skyscrapers (not to mention some of the best shopping venues in Asia), and Shanghai soon became the most densely populated city in the world, housing over 20 million people by 2001. The city was handling rapid expansion just fine until the early 20th century, when wells became a major source of water and the underlying sediment deposit was disturbed. According to PBS, Shanghai sank roughly eight feet between 1921 and 1965, which equals about two inches per year. The city still continues to drop at a rate of about half an inch per year. In this photo Shanghai has apparently sunk more than 2 metres in the last 15 years and continues to sink at a rate of about 1.5 centimetres per year.
  • 18. How much total species of animals extinct from the world due to global warming and how many are in endanger of extinction due to global warming…..?
  • 19. Here are some of the extinct animals and the endangered animals • BIRDS • A 2009 report on the state of birds in the United States found that 251 (31 percent) of the 800 species in the country are of conservation concern. Globally, Birdlife International estimates that 12 percent of known 9,865 bird species are now considered threatened, with 192 species, or 2 percent, facing an “extremely high risk” of extinction in the wild — two more species than in 2008. Habitat loss and degradation have caused most of the bird declines, but the impacts of invasive species and capture by collectors play a big role, too.
  • 20. Reptiles Globally, 21 percent of the total evaluated reptiles in the world are deemed endangered or vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN — 594 species — while in the United States, 32 reptile species are at risk, about 9 percent of the total. Island reptile species have been dealt the hardest blow, with at least 28 island reptiles having died out since 1600. But scientists say that island-style extinctions are creeping onto the mainland's because human activities fragment continental habitats, creating “virtual islands” as they isolate species from one another, preventing interbreeding and hindering populations’ health. The main threats to reptiles are habitat destruction and the invasion of nonnative species, which prey on reptiles and compete with them for habitat and food.
  • 21. FISH • The American Fisheries Society identified 700 species of freshwater or anadromous fish in North America as being imperiled, amounting to 39 percent of all such fish on the continent . In North American marine waters, at least 82 fish species are imperiled. Across the globe, 1,851 species of fish — 21 percent of all fish species evaluated — were deemed at risk of extinction by the IUCN in 2010, including more than a third of sharks and rays.

  • 24. Reduce our consumption of fossil fuels Because greenhouse gas emissions are tied very closely to our energy consumption, using less fossil fuel based energy puts fewer greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This will help slow global warming. Mountaintop removal for coal mining near Rawl, West Virginia. 50% of electricity in the United States is produced from coal.
  • 25. Blowing Up Your World • 1. How many of you leave your bedroom light on when you are not in the room? • Turning off lights saves energy and money. The more energy used, the more rivers are dammed or more fossil fuel is burned, causing air pollution and increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
  • 26. Blowing Up Your World • How many of you walked, bicycled or took public transportation to get to school today, instead of coming by private automobile? Our reliance on cars that burn fossil fuels is one of the major causes of increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and it is the primary cause of urban smog.
