Why is knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology Important to a Personal Support Worker (PSW)?

why is knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology Important to a Personal Support Worker (PSW)?

admin answers:

It is necessary to know Anatomy and Physiology because you are providing basic patient care.
For instance, if you didn't know A&P and you had a patient who had abdominal pain, all you
know is that they are in pain. In the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, moderate pain can be
the result of a gallbladder attack, constipation, pneumonia, muscle strain, pyelonephritis (an
infection of the kidney) or an enlarging liver (for one of many reasons). Severe pain in this area
could be an infected gallbladder, diverticulitis of the colon in that area and, rarely, appendicitis.
Severe pain in the right flank is usually due to either a kidney stone or kidney infection, but a
gallbladder attack can begin with pain in this area.
Moderate pain in the epigastrium (the mid-upper abdomen) is present with ulcer disease of the
stomach or duodenum, early appendicitis, hiatal hernia and gallbladder disease. Severe pain in
this area is felt when an ulcer begins to penetrate (ready to perforate), in pancreatitis (severe
inflammation of the pancreas gland) and occasionally during a heart attack.

You see, it is important to know where all the parts are and what they do, to be able to
determine what may be wrong with the patient. Anyone who puts their hands on some way in
the medical profession should know basic anatomy and physiology.

                                                                                               1/5
Thomas asks…

Do I have the potential to sue?

When I had a pre-purchase done on my horse, the vet happened to miss one very important
thing. He has an umbilical hernia of which is around $1,500 to remove and it can cause many
digestive problems and colic of which both can be life threatening. I'm very bothered that either
the vet missed it, or did not bother to bring it to my attention.

That being said do I have the right to sue the vet and would you sue if you were in this position?
Thank you.

admin answers:

Can you prove that the hernia was apparent when the exam was performed? An umbilical
hernia is usually from a defect in closure of the umbilicus in a foal and that allows abdominal
content to protrude through it. But the umbilicus remains as a natural weakness in the
abdominal wall and a hernia can develop at any age. So this hernia may not have even been
present when the horse was examined. Even if it was, the bulging abdominal lining or intestine
can spontaneously reduce, meaning it slips back into place within the abdominal wall and
cannot be observed or palpated, and may not appear again until intra-abdominal pressure
forces it out.

Unless this was an incarcerated (trapped and non-reducible) hernia that could be proven to
have been present and in that non-reducible, bulging state at the time of the vet exam, proving
any fault on the vet's part would be unlikely. This was obviously not revealed by the previous
owner either, which also doesn't support the previous existence of a hernia.

I don't think you have a case.

Add per Wasabi.............. If this were a legitimate case, it would be handled in small claims court
which does not require attorney representation and costs a minimal fee to file. This condition
does not prove a mistake made on the part of the vet, and vets don't blacklist clients who bring
lawsuits or discuss anything about them with other vets or anyone else because they can be
sued if they do. If anything, they try to keep such lawsuits as hush-hush as possible and hope
that no one hears about them.

                                                                                                2/5
Add 2...................... There is no guarantee that even a 5 stage vet exam would have revealed
this if the hermia was not already bulging at the time of the exam. There is nothing there to see
when the abdoninal contents are not bulging and the inner abdominal peritoneum and outer
overlying fascia and skin are intact to mask the weakened area of the abdominal wall.

Colostomy Support Girdle Available?

My grandmother has a bad abdominal hernia, but can't get a support girdle because she also
has a colostomy. Does anyone make a girdle with a hole in it? Surely her problem can't be
unique.
My grandmother is over 90 years old and the surgeon is afraid to operate. On top of that, he
won't do any research for us! He told us to go find something if we can and he'd tell us if it might
work. Hence my question here.

admin answers:

You're looking for ostomy/hernia support belts. A popular one can be found at Nu-Hope

                                                                                              3/5
William asks…

What physician would I contact to repair a hernia and separated abdominal muscles?

Obviously some kind of surgeon, but I'm not sure if I would contact a general surgeon or a
plastic surgeon or some other specialty surgeon.

The situation, which you don't have to read:

I had a nightmare first pregnancy where I had way too much fluid and ended up blowing up like
crazy and looking like I was having quadruplets. I knew the muscles were very separated and
offered no abdominal support, and I suspected I had a hernia, but I wanted to wait until the
second (and last child) was born so the results wouldn't be destroyed by the pregnancy. Now
I'm pregnant and I spoke to my doctor who confirmed that I have severe muscle separation and
a hernia. She said that if I have a repeat c-section I can have the muscles corrected during the
c-section but not the hernia because of the risk of infection with the mesh. I'd like to talk to a
surgeon to work out a plan for fixing it following the pregnancy. I need to know how long I
should wait after delivery and if I should have the muscles corrected then or wait until the hernia
repair, so that's why I want the consult now so I can plan this out.

admin answers:

Hi there,

You would see a General Surgeon or a Urologist (Urologists are for men and women, just
saying because most people think they are just for men). Not a Plastic Surgeon.

Since you have already been diagnosed, the best thing is to ask your own Physician/OBGYN to
refer you to a Surgeon/Urologist that can perform this for you. Since she has seen you/the
hernia and separated abdominal muscles, she would be best to tell you who to contact, how
long to wait, and so on.

Definitely discuss all of this with her. Your questions, concerns, etc.

Hope this helps a bit, and I wish you great luck with this pregnancy and delivery.

                                                                                             4/5
Take care of yourself now and after delivery as far as the hernia and muscles, so that you can
                                   enjoy your new precious baby!

                                   Congratulations Mommy!

if so , what cautions should be taken to prevent hernia ?
does strengthening abdominal muscles supports the abdominal viscera ?
