important role for oil and gas to ensure energy security. A
new independent regulator will be created to supervise
the exploration and production from the territorial sea and
UK continental shelf. At the moment it is unclear whether
taxes for exploration of oil and gas will be raised again as
previous governments have done.
The department will draft an energy bill focusing on “home-
grown energy sources rather than imports” in order to
“benefit the working people in Britain.” In addition to the
energy bill’s implications for oil and gas, wind power will also
be addressed.
Up until now, large-scale wind power farm applications
(those over 50mw) have been determined by the Secretary
of State for Energy and Climate Change – however, Rudd
stated on 28 May that planning powers will be turned over
to local planning authorities in order to make “decisions on
energy more democratic and give communities a direct say
in planning decisions.” It is early days, but there was no
mentioning of the European Energy Union.
