2. ONLINE LEARNING
E-learning (also called electronic learning) is any type of learning
that takes place through or with a computer. E-learning is primarily
facilitated through the Internet but can also be accomplished with CD-ROMs
and DVDs, streaming audio or video and other media. The
purpose of e-learning is to allow people to learn for personal
accomplishment or to earn a professional degree, without physically
attending a traditional university or academic setting. E-learning can
be applied for all levels of schooling from grade school to graduate
degrees, and is versatile enough to accommodate all learning styles
The only requirements for e-learning (in most cases) requires a
computer with Internet access or a CD/DVD-ROM drive, e-learning
students can learn from home, libraries, Internet cafes or any other
location that has Internet access. This is why e-learning is a preferred
option for those who work full time or part time and cannot afford to
travel to a physical school. The ease of location with e-learning also
makes it preferable to stay-at-home parents with young or special-needs
children. E-learning can also save money in that e-learners do
not have to pay for gas, vehicle repair or parking validation if they
choose to remain at home while taking courses online. Ease of
location is also beneficial to students who are home-schooled, as they
can gain social interaction through online communications as well as
educational materials.

3. One of the most important aspects of online learning is the freedom it
gives those wanting to learn, in comparison with traditional schooling
methods. Many people who would like to go back to school simply
don't have the time to travel to and sit through a physical class. With
online learning, you travel as far as your computer and can, in most
cases, fit your schooling around your normal schedule. Online
education, according to Montgomery College, gives people skills that
many employers might find desirable. Skills such as e-mail, research
ability and computer use are all demonstrated by simply taking online
courses. You can also use the valuable computer and Internet skills
you learn by taking online classes in your everyday life to keep up
with people and things you care about over the Internet. This is
important because it doesn't really matter what class you're taking
online, just the simple fact that you're learning or demonstrating that
you know how to use a computer in such a manner can go a long way.
With physical education, classrooms can frequently become
overcrowded. For some, simply having others present is enough to
cause a distraction that could take from their learning experience.
With online education, it's kind of like having a one-on-one virtual
tutor. Montgomery College says that students often have direct e-mail
access to instructors. This allows questions to easily be answered and
helps ensure students won't be too embarrassed to ask the question in
the first place.

4. Self-discipline and discipline, while similar, are still different. When
you take an online course it requires more self-discipline to follow
through than it would if you physically had teachers and other
students expecting you to be in the classroom with them at a specific
time. Enrolling in and completing online courses shows a high level
of self-discipline, which means you can take the initiative with things
and don't have to wait for others to tell or show you what to do. One
of the most beautiful things about online education is that it's not just
for college students. Many free courses are available online through
programs like OpenCourseWare and The Khan Academy. In fact,
many prestigious universities such as MIT, UC Berkley and UC
Irvine offer totally free online courses through OpenCourseWare.
While this option won't get you the official college credits taking the
paid class would, it can still teach you valuable skills and information
that can be applied to your life and career
There are a number of types of e-learning that depend on the amount
of physical interaction. Entirely online e-learning occurs without any
face-to face interaction. Course work and materials are distributed
electronically through email, websites, online forums and/or CDs or
DVD-ROMs. Combined learning uses a combination of Internet-directed
instruction, as well as face-to-face interaction. Most
traditional colleges and universities use combined learning as students
learn in physical classrooms, with instruction augmented by online
lessons. For those learning for personal accomplishment, e-learning
can also use a combination of e-learning types, as they can be entirely
self-directed, or they can use the assistance of an expert in their
selected field.

5. E-learning has also been praised as a lower-cost option for those
seeking additional education. Costs for individual classes and learning
institutions vary depending on location, degree or type of program,
and area of study. Online universities generally charge the same way
traditional universities do, by charging per credit hour. But also like
traditional universities, scholarships, grants, and student loans are

However, e-learning can also be used to support these developments
at both local and national levels, while digital technologies provide
educators with opportunities to share ideas and resources through
partnerships and learning communities, and across geographic
boundaries.
