His team consists of highly

product managers.
He’s looking to staff his new
project and calls up Ben, his
HR Business Partner.

Ben finds Marc’s question
amusing.

4. Despite the amusement, Ben understood what
Marc said . There’s a reason why Marc called it
the HR’s secret system.
Because budget numbers were supposedly
known only to the HR team. And the line
managers thought the HR wielded undue
powers over hiring, because the numbers were
known only to them.
But in truth, there was no system at all: it was
all spreadsheets.

5. No one had a real-time tab on those numbers. HR
used to take days to tally exits and new hires
against defined budgets.
So whenever a manger asked for hiring, it always
used to take a long time just to know if the hiring
was within budget.
So a common practice was to mark any hire
requisition as ‘exceptional approval’ to get away
with the question of budgets.
And then there were meetings to understand why
there were so many exceptions. Both the HR and
line managers hated the whole process.

6. Over the last 2 yeas, Great Machines has been
growing at YOY rate of 34%. And the company
has been in a hiring spree. Manual tallying just

That’s when the organization decided to invest in a

months. But Ben had found some great results

At first, Marc thought Ben was kidding.
But then, he realized - Ben was talking
of the new HR system.
It was said that the new HR system

But he doubted that.
