Re: Reference Nicola Moubray
Dear Sir/Madam,
Nicola Moubray has requested me to provide a reference letter in support of her application and I am
delighted to be of assistance.
I first met Nicola in April 2010 when I gave a guest lecture at the Faculty of Law of Rhodes
University. Nicola raised an excellent question during the Q&A and we continued our conversation
afterwards. I was actually so impressed by her insight and knowledge, that on the spot I offered her a
fee waiver for the 2011 Summer Institute for Global Justice. This is a summer program set up by
Case Western Reserve University School of Law, Washington University School of Law (St. Louis)
and Utrecht University School of Law. I am one of three co-directors of this summer school which is
ranked the third best U.S. abroad program by the American Bar Association.
After our meeting in Grahamstown, Nicola and I kept in touch. I involved her in a few projects we are
running related to the African position on human rights and international criminal law issues, and the
feedback and support she gave were outstanding. Nicola is a hard worker who has a very bright mind.
She understands issues very quickly and very easily and she delivers high quality memos. Those are
not only attractively written but also inunediately address the core issues.
Nicola joined us for the Summer Institute in June and July 2011. She decided to take my 'Culture and
Human Rights' course and I was delighted to have her in my class. She always had a clear grasp of the
issues and the questions she raised were excellent. Nicola was very well liked by her fellow students
who came from all comers of the world. and I am not surprised that she is still in touch with them
today.
During her time in Utrecht Nicola also joined the Netherlands School of Human Rights Res, arch
(hereafter: School) to work on a that is aimed at the African Union and
International Criminal Court closer Again her contributions were outstanding, and Nicola
was very well liked and respected by the other members of my team.

Since Nicola has left Utrecht to return to South Africa she has kept in touch. She still assists the work
of the School in several ways. Thus, she has joined me on a fundraising campaign to allow more
African students to take part in the Summer Institute and she has been a big help in this regard.
In sum, I think Nicola is an outstanding and very pleasant young lawyer who clearly would be an
asset to your firm. Therefore I would like to endorse her application with enthusiasm. I am, of course,
more than willing to answer any questions you may have about Nicola. I have no objection against
the contents of this reference being shared with her.
Yours sincerely,
