The Inupiaq people of the Far North live in household family groups and form partnerships to successfully hunt marine mammals and caribou for subsistence. Coastal Inupiaq hunt bowhead whales, bearded seals, walrus, and beluga whales, while interior Inupiaq hunt caribou, fish, waterfowl, and smaller fur-bearing animals. Their diet consists mainly of bowhead whale meat, which can be stored for over a year after flencing, and walrus. They use skin boats called umiaks to navigate icy waters during hunts and crossings. The Inupiaq utilize modern machines alongside traditional tools like harpoons and qayaqs. Their
