NCompass Live - 6/21/17 http://nlc.nebraska.gov/ncompasslive/ Emotions are an integral part of the human experience. They give us highly valuable information, but oftentimes we are not aware of how to actually use this information for ourselves or our interactions with others. This workshop will focus on four areas of practice for improving or developing one's emotional intelligence; self-awareness, self-management, awareness of others, building relationships. Participants will gain tools for self-assessment as well as resources for furthering their quest for emotional intelligence. We all deal with people but how many have learned to first deal with ourselves in order to develop healthy and constructive relationships? Presenter: Anneka Ramirez, Director, Three Rivers Library System.

- 7. • 1. An agitated patron approaches the circulation desk to complain about a block on their card due to unpaid fines. • 2. A parent/guardian wants to file a complaint about a title in your collection. • 3. A co-worker receives accolades on a project in which you also contributed to the final product/result. • a) in which you will now supervise people who have been co-workers for many years. • 4. You are promoted to a new position.

- 9. AWARENESS OF OTHERS • “To deny anyone’s right to a complete set of human reactions is to deny our common humanity.” (Pipher, M. 2009. p27) • What you focus on grows
- 10. BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS “I feel more humble and more trusting that others can find their own way. I am learning to love people without working so hard to improve them. [. . .]. I leave them be.” (Pipher, M. 2009. p203) • How do others feel when we respect their ability to choose for themselves?
- 11. IN THE END “We humans carry more or less the same template for growth.” (Pipher, M. 2009. p14) • We all are free to make choices and change our minds but so is everyone else!

- EI recognizes that emotions are really just information we can use to assess our internal and external environments. A realistic assessment allows us to choose appropriate responses.
- Take notes for physical reactions and mental – these can be red flags to ourselves that we need to be aware of…what is your internal dialogue? Do you speak to yourself in a kind and loving manner or is your internal taskmaster critiquing all you do?
