Thinking activity
1. Title of the thinking routine:
Connect Extend Challenge
Explanation:
This thinking routine helps students make connections between the new
content and their previous knowledge. I will use at the end of the unit “The
Middle Ages” because it encourages the students to take stock of ongoing
questions as they are linking the new concepts with what they have learned
during this unit.
Resources:
We will need a poster board and post-its in three different colors.
How are you going to use it?
At the end of the unit, we will work in groups of four in order to share
thoughts and ideas for the three categories “Connect” (how are the
information of the unit connected to what they previously know?), “Extend”
(what ideas did they get that extended their thinking in new directions?) and
“Challenge” (what is confusing for they? What questions do they have?).
Each group is going to write them in the post-its, using a color in each
category. After twenty minutes, the group class is going to share their ideas
and, when they come to an agreement, they should stick the post-its in the
poster board.
