• Cornea is the clear tissue
covering the front of the
eye.
• Vision is lost if the cornea
becomes cloudy and
opaque.
• Causes include:
– Injuries
– Infections (incl. Post‐
Operative)
– Malnutrition
– Chemical burns
– Congenital disorders
10. Facts about Eye Donation
• Cornea removal needs to be done within 4to 6 hours
• Eye collector comes on site and removal is fast (~20 minutes)
• No delay to funeral nor disfigurement to donor
• Donor can be of any age: <12 months to 90+ years
• Most people under medical treatment can donate:
– Spectacle‐wearers, patients with cataract, Asthma, TB, hypertension,
diabetes and most other non‐communicable systemic disorders
• Two people gain sight from a single donor
• Donor and recipient information is kept confidential
• All Religions endorse eye donation
• Next of kin can approve donation even if not pledged by donor
