1. Know Your Shipmate
Why did you join the Navy?
I found myself unable to get a job, I had no motivation to pursue college, and
my girlfriend of 3 years left me. I wanted to belong to something much bigger
than myself, and meet people from all over the country so I chose the Navy over
the other services for the opportunity to travel.
Where are you from?
I am originally from the Philippines and migrated to California
What do you like about the Navy?
I like being in the military itself and of course my job and the education op-
portunities. I became a US citizen three months after joining the Navy. I love
to travel and the job security. In the military, you just do the right thing and do
your job, everything will be alright.
What are your hobbies on your liberty time?
Cooking, I am the queen of the kitchen. But really I was the type of person who
didn’t go out or hang out with friends until I transferred to Misawa.
How long have you been in the Navy?
I’ve been in for six years and one month.
What’s your favorite food?
I was raised in the Philippines so I love Asian food especially Filipino food.
What have you gained from being in the Navy?
I have gained professionalism and respect for others. I have also gained knowl-
edge to do my job and I learned how to mingle with different kinds of race
where back then I was so scared to talk to any Americans. But the military gave
me strength and taught me that everybody is equal and that I don’t have to be
scared of no one.
What do you want to get out of the Navy now?
Although I have a Bachelor of Science in Commerce with a major in Banking
and Finance in the Philippines, I always want to go to school while in the Navy.
What is your dream deployment?
Rome, Italy
If you had the choice, what would be your last meal?
Steam Rice & Chicken Adobo
Where have you been so far in the Navy?
I was attached with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion FIVE for five years from Aug. 2006 to January 2011, my first Command. My first deploy-
ment was in Kuwait (2006), Okinawa/Guam (2008) Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan (2009) back to back Afghanistan (2010).
How long do you plan to stay in the Navy for?
Until I want to. I can really never tell, because there are a lot of opportunities in the Military.
What’s your favorite sports team?
Once I learned the game and the rules of basketball, I started following the San Antonio Spurs.
Who is your mentor?
LSCS Carlene Maxie.
What’s your favorite activity?
I like to PT and work with the Akebono Orphanage.
What’s your favorite movie?
“Ever After” with Drew Barrymore is my favorite movie.
Who’s your favorite artist?
My favorite artist is Sandra Bullock.
If you had a million dollars what would you do?
I would take half for me; give 25% to the Akebono Orphanage and the other 25% split up between the church I grew up in and charities.
What is you favorite superhero and why?
Iron Man because he is stubborn but will do anything to save people.
