Osborne’s La Fuente
program for women took
its name from the Spanish
for “The Fountain.”
Fountains and the water
they contain have historically
symbolized life, birth, rebirth,
rejuvenation, and wisdom.
Here at Osborne,
it symbolizes the
transformation women
experience while in
the La Fuente program,
as each develops a
sense of wellbeing and
empowerment.
Women’s empowerment
for a healthy quality of life
Monica Morales,
Program Coordinator of
La Fuente, brings her
many years of experi-
ence as a
substance abuse
counselor and peer
educator to the
Osborne Association.
Raised in the Bronx, inspired by her grand-
mother who gave her a safe space to express
herself, and now currently raising her own
daughters in the community as a single parent,
Monica understands many of the needs of the
women in the community, and the variety of
helpful resources available for them.
Our counselors seek to
provide a safe place where
women can feel a sense of
belonging, build on their
strengths, connect with
peers, and emerge from
trauma with the conviction
that they can transform
their lives.

2. Helen liked that La Fuente
provided a safe environment
for her to grow. The group
and individual sessions gave
Helen legal advice, helped
her with job readiness, and
allowed her to consider other
career avenues. “The program
put me on the right path,”
said Helen, who realized what
career she’d like to pursue
while at La Fuente. Helen decided she likes to work with
people and hopes to earn a CASAC certificate in the
future.
On Rachel’s first day at
La Fuente, she attended a
New York Mets game with
counselors and other partici-
pants. From then on she was
hooked. “La Fuente helped
me approach situations with a
different attitude and with not
so much anger,” said Rachel.
Hoping to attend nursing
school soon and obtain a
nursing degree, Rachel now feels that she has a clear
direction in life.
La Fuente offers outpatient
primary services to women
with a history of criminal
justice, family court and
ACS involvement.
“Natasha” feels that she has
received an enormous amount
of support from Osborne staff
especially for her vocational
and personal goals. With the
support of her vocational
counselor, David Thorpe,
Natasha applied and was
awarded a grant from
Access-VR to attend a
Beautician school.
Since joining Osborne, she has remained abstinent from
drugs, and further, has not had any temptation to
relapse. She feels very comfortable approaching staff
with questions and concerns. She stated, “I built a trust
in Monica because I know she will guide me in the right
direction.” Natasha also noted that the group MRT
sessions (a form of cognitive behavioral therapy) helped
her learn more about herself, what was causing her to
act out, and have helped her feel empowered to manage
her relationships with others in a healthy way.
Many women have faced
similar challenges, and like
Helen, Natasha, and Rachel,
they have found comfort in
addressing their experiences
together.

Osborne’s La Fuente program offers
opportunities for women to address the
various challenges they may face upon
reentry after incarceration. Programs
include outpatient substance abuse
treatment, access to primary healthcare,
support for healthy relationships,
vocational and educational assistance,
as well as life skills counseling. We also
offer daycare and childcare services for
eligible, participating women.
La Fuente offers a treatment program
designed for women from all five New
York City boroughs who are 18 years old
or older. To participate, women do not
need to provide proof of citizenship.
Every Tuesday, the women in La Fuente
gather to participate in Tea Time, a support
group that uses therapeutic activities such
as painting and creative writing to promote
a sense of safety, wellbeing, and belonging.
